Job Summary:
The Band Director is responsible for planning, coordinating, and directing instrumental music programs for middle and/or high school students in accordance with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study for Arts Education. This includes classroom instruction, extracurricular performances, and fostering a positive musical experience for students.
Key Responsibilities:
Instruction & Curriculum
Teach instrumental music, including music theory, performance technique, and ensemble practice
Develop and implement lesson plans that align with NC DPI Music Standards
Adapt teaching methods and materials to meet the needs of students with varying abilities
Ensemble Leadership
Direct concert band, marching band, jazz band, and other ensembles as assigned
Coordinate and oversee performances, including concerts, competitions, parades, and pep rallies
Administrative & Organizational Duties
Maintain inventory of instruments, uniforms, and sheet music
Organize band-related travel and events, including transportation and chaperones
Oversee student fundraising activities and manage band budget in collaboration with school leadership
Student Development
Foster student engagement, discipline, and leadership within the band program
Prepare students for individual and group competitions and auditions (e.g., All-District/All-State Band)
Encourage students’ academic success and personal growth through participation in the music program
Collaboration & Communication
Work cooperatively with other teachers, administrators, parents, and booster organizations
Attend staff meetings, parent conferences, and professional development workshops
Communicate effectively with students, families, and the community
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Music Education or related field
Valid North Carolina teaching license (K-12 Music or Instrumental Music Education)
Experience in band instruction preferred (student teaching and internships considered)
Strong conducting, instrumental, and music theory skills
Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s degree in Music or Music Education
Experience directing marching band and concert ensembles
Familiarity with NC Bandmasters Association and MPA (Music Performance Assessment) events
Working Conditions:
Regular school hours with additional evenings/weekends for performances and events
Ability to lift instruments and equipment, supervise students outdoors (marching band), and travel with groups
Salary:
Per North Carolina DPI teacher salary schedule, with supplements as applicable by local district.
