Position Description The Graduate Assistant (GA) will work 20 hours per week and receive up to 24 credits of tuition and student fee waivers: 9 for fall, 9 for spring and 6 for summer. Description of Duties
The GA would support the Biology department in taking care of its animals used in our teaching and research experiences. The department currently houses approximately 100 mice and maintains 100 vials of fruit flies for use in five courses (BIOL 265, BIOL 360, BIOL 373, BIOL 482, BIOL 495/525) and are necessary for the research programs of some of the faculty in biology. Mice and fruit flies are the two most common animal models used in biology research. The GA will be able to learn animal handling skills, which is an important skill to have for students working in biotech and pharmaceuticals, as all therapeutics and many devices require animal research before bringing the product to market. Students who wish to pursue careers in ecological and field studies would also benefit from learning about animal handling skills in a laboratory setting. Duties for the mice will include:
weighing the mice and regular health checks,
food and fluid replacement,
cage cleanings,
behavioral assessment of the mice,
organization and note taking on health and behavioral observations of the mice, and
administration of therapeutics or other compounds. Duties for the fruit fly work will include:
replacement of old vials and production of new vials,
transferring of fruit flies from one vial to another,
performing genetic crosses between strains of fruit flies, and
organization and note taking about the status of the fruit fly stocks. Preferred Qualifications Qualifications
Basic understanding of Microsoft office
Understanding of Biology through previous course work. Physical Demands Able to lift 15 pounds
