Canine CellMates is looking for an excellent dog trainer to lead the training in our out-of-custody program, Beyond The Bars.
About us:
Canine CellMates / Beyond the Bars, a unique program focused on rehabilitation instead of punishment, has as its mission “Utilizing Shelter Dogs to Break the Cycle of Incarceration.” Rescue dogs are the heart of our program, and the magic that facilitates positive change. We run our programs around the concept of positive reinforcement, and apply that concept to staff, volunteers and the men in our programs.

Of course there are some other requirements we are looking for – they are: v v Be a member of the Assessment team which assesses temperament and compatibility of dogs at the shelter for dog selection v Ensure that all training surrounding Canine CellMates dogs while in the program and in after care is positive and force free v Follow week by week training calendar for program v Set up and lead training classes on scheduled days – Can be delegated to training assistants on occasion v Develop a weekly assessment process to identify any dog that needs additional help to reach obedience level goal by end of class / cycle v Evaluate and develop training assistants’ knowledge; specifically, dog handling skills, and basic training knowledge, so that with instruction, assistants could cover classes as needed v Evaluate and report to Executive Director progress and/or noted medical / behavioral issues of all dogs currently in the care of CCM. If identified issues are behavioral, develop, implement and document protocol, frequency and progress, with goal being readying dog for adoption v Report to Executive Director progress and/or issues related to each program participant’s ability to remain in the program (including participation, compliance, or any other issues that may need addressing) v Test each dog in the week prior to graduation to ensure that each has attained the minimum acceptable level of obedience skills v Assist in adoptions with dog-to-dog and/or dog-to-cat intros as available
Qualifications/Educational Background:
Minimum of high school diploma or equivalent preferred Dog training certification, or very close to completion (CPDT-KA preferred, but will consider others) Must have reliable transportation Must love dogs – and humans!
