Job Description

Lead Veterinary Technician Flemington Veterinary Hospital 3263 East Oglethorpe Highway, Hinesville, GA 31313 The Senior Veterinary Technician assist the doctors to the fullest possible extent, to help improve the quality of care given to patients, and to aid doctors in achieving greater efficiency by relieving them of technical work at Flemington Veterinary Hospital. The Senior Veterinary Technician’s job duties encompasses all the duties of the veterinary technician along with added responsibilities to include floor leadership, monitoring and supporting hospital flow needs, overseeing training, supervision of department members during assigned/scheduled shifts and flow of operations. The Senior Veterinary Technician assists in multiple procedures providing care for animals including physical examinations, dental procedures, surgeries, immunizations, euthanasia as well as client education, marketing and inventory maintenance. This position requires a working knowledge of pharmaceutical drugs, common diseases; their symptons, means of transmission, treatment and prevention, and other basic preventative health care recommendations. The Senior Veterinary Technician is under the direct guidance and supervision of the Practice Manager and Veterinarians.

  • Support and maintain the core values and mission statement of FVH.
  • Act as the Veterinary Technician Team Leader by performing ongoing training and supervision of all medical support staff to ensure that the standard of patient care and client services is consistently practiced by all members of the medical support department.
  • Actively direct/assist the medical support team members in their performance of a variety of technical and client education duties that facilitate the work of the practitioners, kennel assistants and the practice manager who directly or indirectly provide patient care.
  • Make recommendations to the practice manager concerning personnel matters.

Direct on-the-job training for the new and existing team members. Discuss disciplinary actions needed with the practice manager and assist with follow through. Resolve informal employee complaints; provide a general explanation of the nature and basis for hospital personnel policies and procedures. Maintain effective and professional employee-management communication. Obtain and record patient histories. Collect specimens and perform routine laboratory procedures and tests in hematology, biochemistry, chemistry, microbiology, urinalysis, and serology to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of animal health problems. Dispense and administer medications, vaccines, serums and treatments as prescribed by veterinarians. Administer fluids and blood products as prescribed by the veterinarian. Administer and monitor anesthesia under the direction of a veterinarian. Provide specialized nursing care for injured or ill patients. Prepare patients, instruments and equipment for surgery. Assure that monitoring and support equipment such as anesthetic machines, cardiac monitors, scopes and breathing apparatus are in good working condition. Assist in diagnostic, medical and surgical procedures using a range of high-tech diagnostic equipment including electrocardiographic, radiographic and ultrasonographic equipment. Take and process radiographs, both standard digital and dental. Communicate with and educate owners in person, by telephone, and by email. Maintain knowledge of preventative healthcare recommendations in order to answer client questions, provide education on vaccines, flea and heartworm products, and assist in marketing veterinary services from which their pet would benefit, such as a dental cleaning, senior wellness, spay and neuter and boarding/daycare. Educate clients on products and medications sold including dietary products and preventives and answer questions regarding product purchase/use. Maintain inventory of pharmaceuticals, equipment and supplies. Clean, maintain and sterilize instruments, equipment, and materials. Ensure that ongoing maintenance of all equipment is being performed correctly and on time. Troubleshoot problems with equipment by contacting customer support for the given tool. Keep Practice Manager informed of any equipment that is broken or damaged so that it can be repaired or replaced.

  • Knowledgeable regarding related federal and state animal health laws and regulations including
USDA, GA, GA

Dept of Ag, OSHA, and DEA. Ensure that the hospital and its employees are in compliance with regulations. Inform the veterinary hospital administrator of any regulatory issues. Work well with all team members and ensure that your actions support the hospital, the doctors, and the practice philosophy. Calaborate with management to set support staffing schedules and ensure proper coverage of hospital needs. Perform other duties as assigned.

  • A minimum of three years of experience in veterinary medical care required.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with three years of veterinary medical care, and leadership experience, and/or Licensed Veterinary Nurse, Bachelors degree in the animal sciences field.
  • Former veterinary experience is preferred.
  • Advanced computer skills and proficiency in MS Excel required; intermediate skills and proficiency in MS Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint required. It will also be necessary to become proficient in the use of practice management software.
  • Ability to observe animal appearance and activity for general physical condition, obvious signs of illness, disease and discontent.
  • Regular attendance and timeliness are an essential function in order to fulfill the requirements of this position.
  • Strong communication and client service skills. Considerable tact and diplomacy is required. Ability to work with clients and patients in a professional, friendly, hospitable manner.
  • Perform general physical activities that require bending, standing, stooping, moving from room to room, sit, talk, and listen; may be required to walk or stand for long periods of time; will use hands to manipulate, handle, or feel; will reach with hands and arms.
  • Frequently lift, carry and handle dogs weighing 50 lbs.
  • Adhere to practice procedures and protocols and supervise others to do the same.
  • Annual salary range: $51K – $55K

Schedule:

8 hour / 5 days a week or 10 hour / 4 days a week

  • Rotation of on-call weekends and holiday schedules
