UP PAT BARGAINING UNIT NON-EXEMPT BASIC FUNCTION

To provide support for the faculty, students, and teaching animals in all aspects of the Veterinary Technology Program including but not limited to: Veterinary nursing care for the animals in the Vet Tech facility and barn, nursing and technical assistance in all VET course labs, supervision of students on animal care shifts, animal husbandry and animal medical record oversight; inventory tracking and control, purchasing and equipment maintenance, maintenance of appropriate safety and personal protective equipment ; and multiple administrative duties as described below.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

During all VET course laboratories, assist the faculty and provide for our teaching animals, including spay, neuter, dental and radiography in-house and outpatients, and demonstrate for our students the following roles/skills: Veterinary nursing care (primary, emergency, surgical, anesthetic, postop recovery care and monitoring) Sterile techniques to assist during a surgery, surgical instrument cleaning, packaging, and autoclave sterilization Radiology technician Veterinary dental hygienist and assistant Diagnostic and laboratory testing (ie ECG, blood, urine, fecal testing, milk) Administration of medications including by mouth, intra-muscular, intravenous, and subcutaneous, for multiple small, large, pocket pet and reptile species Pharmacy technician, including drug dosing calculations Perform daily rounds/checks of animals in the Vet Tech facility. Administering or supervising any student treatments for sick, recovering, or injured animals. Assist VET faculty in conducting and supervising labs, including explaining and demonstrating new techniques, assisting students with procedures or projects, ensuring proper use and cleaning of equipment and materials by students. Assist in administering and grading lab quizzes and exams. Supervise/carry out the physical set-up and preparation of equipment and materials needed for VET labs as well as the return of equipment and materials to storage after each lab. Responsible for procurement, care and supervision of animals and animal husbandry by students as part of the Veterinary Program for teaching purposes including but not limited to: canine, feline, small ruminants (goats or sheep), horses, cows, rabbits, rats, birds and reptiles. Procurement will coincide with requirements of VET courses and availability of appropriate housing in accordance with USDA regulations. Supervision of students enrolled in

Weekly review animal medical and husbandry records and documents to correct student errors and maintain USDA and Animal Welfare Act (AWA) compliance for housing and husbandry. Communicate with students regarding errors, and legal correction of animal medical record entries. Communicate with program veterinarian regarding animal health issues, and animal care issues that need to be addressed with students. Be on stand by status and available for non-medical problems (ie, heat, water, power outages) ,and act as liaison between students on animal care shift and program veterinarian for medical emergencies as needed outside of standard work schedule of the College. This includes early mornings, evenings, weekends and holidays when animals are in the Morrill Vet Tech facility and/or Vet Tech barn.

DEPARTMENT ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES

Coordinate and plan with VET faculty VET laboratory schedules for animal medical procedures (ie spay, neuter, dentistry, vaccines, radiography, deworming, physical exams, etc). Coordinate tracking the progress of each Vet Tech student’s completion of > 300 hands-on and knowledge-based tasks required by

accrediting agency, utilizing database software. Track and record ID and rabies vaccination information regarding every animal involved in teaching labs, including spay/neuter/dental surgeries, per Randolph campus IACUC (Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee) and USDA protocols. Communicate with area shelters and other partners with whom the program has MOU’s to coordinate and schedule animal spays and neuters, farrier visits, and animal transport. Generate student animal care shift schedule for morning, noon, and evening weekday and weekend schedule for students enrolled in Veterinary Technology courses

Veterinary Supervisor. Assume primary care responsibility when class is not in session and animals are housed on campus, or supervise direct hire/work-study students performing these duties. Responsible for accurate documentation, completion, and storage of all records in compliance with USDA, OSHA, AVMA, and DEA regulations. Responsible for maintaining program’s required memberships and licensures. Order supplies and select and budget for new equipment and/or repairs used by the Veterinary Technology program which include but not limited to laboratory supplies, bedding and animal feed, drugs, surgical and radiographic supplies, anesthetic equipment, radiology equipment, dental equipment, blood lab machines. Participate in the biannual meetings of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee. Responsible for recording minutes and correction of noted deficiencies by due date. Attend Continuing Education conferences to maintain certification and to maintain and inform the rest of the department regarding advances in veterinary technology/nursing. Assist Vet Tech Program Director with collection and assimilation of materials and information required for

accreditor biennial reports, SelfStudy, and reaccreditation site visits. Collect and track Vet Tech freshmen paperwork required per the Vet Tech Handbook at the beginning of each academic year. Assist Program Director with generation of new policies per updated requirements by the CVTEA-AVMA and/or the

USDA. SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Minimal supervision is received from the Dean of Academic Affairs or other senior staff or faculty member.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Partial administrative and functional supervision of all students enrolled in the Veterinary Technology Program, VET 1051, VET 1052, and VET 2720, as well as workstudy students.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Associates Degree in Veterinary Technology from a

CVTEA-AVMA

accredited program, plus a minimum of three years’ experience in a clinical veterinary practice or a combination of comparable education and experience. Certified, Licensed or Registered Veterinary Technician/Veterinary Nurse with certification in good standing. Minimum required attendance at Continuing Education conferences to maintain certification. Strong academic background in the veterinary technology discipline with good veterinary nursing skills, technical lab skills, medical math skills, and including relevant skills and experience in equipment maintenance, trouble-shooting and repairs. Effective basic administrative, computer and supervisory skills Experience and comfort level with veterinary medical record software. Effective database creation and tracking experience and skills. Effective basic teaching and informal advising/coaching skills. Ability to deal effectively with faculty, students and staff. Must be able to lift approximately 50 pounds.
