Position Overview:
Responsible for posting charges for surgeries and other services and assisting patients with their accounts, both in the office and on the phone. Provides training and guidance to Front Desk staff to estimate and collect patient responsibility for services received the same day, and balances from prior dates of service. Position requires accuracy, thoroughness and a good understanding of insurance procedures for referrals, copays, deductibles, allowables, CPT codes and Dx codes. Work is multitasked and interrupted often. Must have the ability to communicate medical billing practices, which can sometimes be complex, effectively with patients.
Responsibilities:
Posts and creates claims daily Re-bill late charges as needed Process manual claim adjustments Submit paper claims Corrects invalid data and resubmits corrected Invalid/ Rejected Claims within one day Corrects invalid data and resubmits corrected Denied Claims within three days Follows up with payers on appealed claims Communicates denial trends to physician and Chief Financial and Strategic Officer Reviews payments to unit allowables for accuracy and resubmits all underpaid claims for recovery Calculates patient balances and collects balances from patients two weeks prior to surgery for all deductibles, co-insurance and copays Researches eligibility status of Unknown, Inactive, Fail/Error and communicates any available finding to Front Desk upon request Enters billing alerts to guide Front Desk on collecting point-of-service payments (i.e. copays, deductibles) from all patients seen by their assigned doctors Enters billing alerts to guide Front Desk on collecting payments on all balances from prior dates of service from all patients seen by their assigned doctors Responds to Front Desk staff questions on patient collections while the patient is in the office Adds pre-authorization number appointment in Practice Management upon receipt Sets up payment plans for patients Each month, submits patient balances over 90 days old from the date the balance was created to the physician for approval to submit to collection agency Each month, submits proposed write-off of insurance balances over 120 days old from the date of first submission to the physician and Chief Financial and Strategic Officer Creates and reviews physician A/R aging report and takes appropriate action to keep A/R over 120 days under 150% of total physician
A/R Qualifications:
High school education required Medical practice experience, surgical practice experience preferred Excellent verbal and written communication skills Efficiency and organizational skills Administrative skills Computer literacy and adaptive to new technology
