DEQ has an open opportunity for a Geologist/Hydrogeologist (Flexible/Hybrid) It is full-time (40 hours per week) with State Benefits . This position currently qualifies for a hybrid telework option with routine office and remote workdays. The NC Department of Environmental Quality trusts our employees to be self-motivated and successful in hybrid/remote roles. Telework options are subject to change at the discretion of management. The Geologist/Hydrogeologist (Project Geologist) position is responsible for conducting independent investigations utilizing detailed field mapping techniques and geographic information systems to produce bedrock and surficial geological maps. The position conducts advanced research using petrographic and geochemical methods to support mapping and mineral projects. The position oversees digital cartography operations and may be responsible for ensuring compliance with USGS GeMS mapping schema. The position provides geological information and technical assistance to the general public, private industry, and other government agencies. The position may assist with emergency responses to landslides.

Key Responsibilities:

Collect and interpret detailed field observations of rocks, minerals, and geologic structures. This includes digital data collection and the use of digital mapping techniques. Coordinate field mapping of a two-person team to meet project deadlines. This position is responsible for the conversion of digitally collected field data into mapping products. This position also assists leadership in planning and completing work assignments. Assist in the preparation and peer review of all documents produced by the mapping team. Prepare clear, concise, and organized documents, maps and reports addressing complex geologic concepts

The Division of Energy, Mineral, and Land Resources:

The Division of Energy, Mineral and Land Resources (DEMLR) is comprised of two

Sections:

Land Quality and Geological Survey.

https://deq.nc.gov/about/divisions/energy-mineral-and-land-resources The Land Quality Section is responsible for the administration of four regulatory programs: Dam Safety Program as authorized by the Dam Safety of 1967, Mining Program as authorized by the Mining Act of 1971, Sediment Program as authorized by the Sedimentation Pollution Control Act of 1973 and Stormwater Program as authorized by state statutes and the federal Clean Water Act. DEMLR collects permit fees and issues permits for mines, dams, sedimentation control for construction sites, and stormwater permits for various activities and refers enforcement cases to the Attorney General’s Office. DEMLR is responsible for scheduling, organizing and transcribing minutes of the North Carolina Mining Commission and the Sedimentation Control Commission as well as reporting to the Environmental Management Commission regarding dam safety and stormwater matters. The N.C. Geological Survey (NCGS) Section’s mission is to provide unbiased and technically accurate applied earth science scientific information to address societal needs. This includes geologic maps, mineral resource and geochemical information, topographic maps and digital products, and earth science education initiatives. The NCGS “…examines, surveys, and maps the geology, mineral resources, and topography of the state” and encourages the wise conservation and use of geologic resources by industry, commerce, agriculture and government agencies for the general welfare of the citizens of North Carolina. The results of the NCGS research are documented in Bulletins, Open File Reports, Information Circulars, Special Publications, and Geologic Map Series. The NCGS along with DEMLR provide staff to the Oil and Gas Commission.

To qualify for this position, applicants must document on the application that they possess ALL of the following: Demonstrated knowledge of geology including concepts, principles and/or theories of geology, hydrogeology, geosciences, and/or geomorphology. Demonstrated knowledge of data gathering techniques and/or procedures associated with field based geologic mapping. Demonstrated knowledge to plan geological and/or geomorphological studies for research projects using geographic information systems and/or spatial location modeling including remote sensing such as lidar, aerial photography, and/or orthophotography. Experience with communication to groups of people including but not limited to general public, industry professionals, and/or government representatives. Bachelor’s degree in geology, geosciences, physical science or a related field, or engineering with 30 credit hours of geological science course work from an accredited college or university. Some positions may require licensure as a Professional Geologist by the North Carolina Board for the Licensing of Geologists; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
