Job Description
Position Summary:
The Teichberg lab at the MBL seeks a highly motivated individual to join The Ecosystems Center as a full-time Research Assistant II to assist with the SEAGEN project. This project aims to develop biotechnological tools for regeneration of seagrass tissue from callus for potential use in seagrass propagation and genetic transformation experiments. Tasks include starting and maintaining seagrass tissue cultures, setting up experiments to test methods of regeneration with different types of seagrass tissue and media, data collection, management, and analysis, and presentation of results at workshops/conferences as well as through written manuscript. The candidate will also help to organize a seagrass workshop on seagrass biotechnology tools. This position is primarily lab work with some fieldwork for sample collection of seagrass seeds. The successful applicant should also be willing to help with basic preparations for field work such as organizing, cleaning and maintaining gear and small boats. Position is for one year but may be extended beyond this period. For full consideration, please submit application by July 15 th . Approximate start date August/September 2025.
Basic Qualifications:
Applicants should have an undergraduate degree (B.S. or B.A.) and a master’s degree (M.S. or M.A.) or 2 years of equivalent experience in subject areas such as Biology, Plant Sciences, Horticultural Sciences, or Marine Sciences. Must have strong laboratory skills in preparation of reagents and media, sterilization and culturing techniques, and be familiar with general use of laboratory equipment. Must be able to work independently and in a team.
Desire to work in a collaborative environment. Applicant should have a valid drivers license.
Preferred Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will have knowledge of marine plants or algae and experience with tissue culture and sterilization techniques.
Physical Requirements:
Working daily in a chemical/biological laboratory. Minimal exposure to biohazardous chemicals. Some field work in aquatic environments is necessary for collecting samples including swimming, snorkeling, and/or wading in shallow water. Some work in the seawater lab is required at the Marine Resources Center.
