Responsibilities We are seeking ahighly motivated and talented postdoctoral fellow to join ourSurgical Outcomes and Oncology research team in The Department ofSurgery at Mayo Clinic in the field of Machine Learning andArtificial Intelligence (AI). The position is for a 2-year paidfellowship (minimum 1 year commitment) with the possibility ofextension beyond 2 years based on performance and availability offunding. Fellows would work under the mentorship of Dr. CorneliusThiels, Surgeon in the Division of Hepatobiliary & Pancreas Surgeryand Dr. Hojjat Salehinejad, Scientist in the Kern Center for theScience of Health Care Delivery & Assistant Professor of HealthCare Systems Engineering. The successful candidate will have theopportunity to work with a dynamic and collaborative research teamand make significant contributions to the advancement of medical AIresearch.

Responsibilities:
  • Conduct original research in AI andrelated fields, including designing and implementing experiments,developing algorithms, and analyzing results.
  • Publish researchfindings in top-tier medical conferences and journals.
  • Collaborate with other researchers and team members to advanceresearch goals and solve challenging problems.
  • Participate in thedevelopment of new research proposals and assist with grantwriting.

A Research Fellow at Mayo Clinic is a temporary positionintended to provide training and education in research. Individualswill train in the research program of a Mayo Clinic principalinvestigator. Qualified individuals will demonstrate the potentialfor research as evidenced by their training and peer-reviewedpublications and should become competitive for national researchgrants. Upon background check and CCATS Executive Committeeapproval, Research Fellow may have patient/research subject contactdirectly relating to and incidental to the original researchprogram. Proof of English proficiency is required for J-1Short-Term Scholars, Research Scholars, Professors, Specialists,and Student Interns sponsored by Mayo Clinic. Qualifications Ph.D.in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related fieldwith a strong emphasis on AI, machine learning, or related fieldsor a MD, DO, or equivalent doctoral in a field deemed relevant bythe program. Candidates in training or those with without advancesdegrees who have prior work experience are also encouraged toapply. Surgical trainees with relevant prior experiences who areable to take time out of their training (lab years) are alsoencouraged to apply. The application is open to both clinicians,research candidates, and those in technology sector including thosecurrently in training or have recently completed training(post-doc). The expectation at the end of the fellowship is thatthe fellow will be well prepared to become a leader in HealthcareAI/ML, either in the academic or biotechnology setting. The idealcandidate must have strong expertise in data structures andalgorithms, Python programming language (including libraries suchas Pandas, Scikit-learn), shell scripting, Tensorflow/PyTroch(preferred), and/or machine learning (particularly deep learning).Expertise in statistical learning and random processes, Docker,DBMS (e.g. MySQL, Redis), and Google Cloud Services (GCP) is aplus. The candidate must have a track-record ofpublications/scientific writing and have strong proficiency in allfour skills of English language, including ideally experience inwriting scientific manuscripts. Compensation Detail $64,079.00 -$74,963.00/year. Education, experience and tenure may be consideredalong with internal equity when job offers are extended.
