- The NC Wildlife Resources Commission Mission Statement is to conserve North Carolina’s wildlife resources and their habitats and provide programs and opportunities that allow hunters, anglers, boaters and other outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy wildlife-associated recreation.
The Commission is the regulatory agency responsible for the enforcement of N.C. fishing, hunting, trapping and boating laws. The NCWRC employs nearly 700 full-time staff across the state, including wildlife and fisheries biologists and technicians, wildlife law enforcement officers, wildlife educators, communication specialists, customer service, information technology, and administrative professionals. The NC Wildlife Resources Commission’s Land and Water Access Division oversees the agency’s Game Land Program, land acquisition program, maintenance of boating and fishing access areas, and navigational aids. Most of the activities performed in this Section are accomplished by agency technicians, biologists, and forest managers. This Division also manages the agency’s Wildlife Inmate Services (WISE) program as well as grants planning and office support. Most technicians, biologists, and forest managers are assigned to one of three EcoRegions in the State. Each EcoRegion is managed by a Conservation Management Coordinator who reports to the division chief. The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission is seeking applicants for a Conservation Biologist II/Southern Piedmont Management Biologist for our Land and Water Access Division. Primary work responsibility involves planning, organizing, and coordinating with various program personnel to implement wildlife management activities on public lands. A considerable amount of time will be spent developing game land specific prescriptions to address species and habitat needs, taking a leadership role on the development of game land specific management plans, coordinating, developing and implementing wildlife and habitat surveys to track trends or to evaluate impacts of actions. This person is responsible for planning, organizing, coordinating, and directing game land management operations within a work area and will provide biological training and feedback to employees. Position is responsible for maintaining contact with cooperating agencies and organizations as it relates to wildlife management issues. In addition, this position will lead and coordinate land acquisition activities within the work area, play a significant role in ecosystem restoration, reforestation, and vegetative management, monitoring of RCW populations and other endangered or rare population on game lands, presenting wildlife related programs to the public, serving on various committees as required and other duties as assigned. Duties also include participation in the development of work plans, maintenance or records, assisting with wildlife surveys and data collections, and general maintenance of equipment and facilities. A modified schedule is associated with this position which involves working 40 hours per week (specific times set by manager), though night work and overnight travel may be required on occasion. Individual in this position may be required to work some weekends and/or holidays. This position is based in the Southern Piedmont work area and may be based out of the Sandhills Depot, Troy Depot or home based. Qualified Applicants must possess:
Knowledge of the principles and techniques of wildlife management.
Knowledge of land and forest management and agricultural practices.
Ability to identify wildlife and plants.
Management Preferences:
Good communication skills including the ability to prepare written technical reports and maps, communicate orally, and establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, cooperating agencies and organizations, and the general public is mandatory to meet program objectives.
The ability to write grant applications to seek funding for land acquisition is required.
Knowledge in the operation of GPS units and ArcGIS/GIS Pro is preferred.
NC Certified Prescribed Burner and NWCG Wildland Fighter Type II preferred.
Special Qualifications/Requirements:
Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license is required within 90 days of hire. Candidate must present proof of a valid NC Driver’s License and proof of an acceptable driving record. Possession of a North Carolina Pesticide Applicators license is required within 6 months of employment. A NC Drone Pilot operator’s license (as described in 14 CFR, F, Part 107) or ability to obtain one within 12 months of hire may be required for this position.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to work primarily outdoors, in all kinds of weather conditions.
Ability to perform manual labor, lifting medium to heavy items weighing up to 50 pounds daily.
Ability to wear safety equipment and follow established safety regulations and procedures.
