HOKE COUNTY SCHOOLS

Central Office Custodian/Bus Driver

Title:

12 months

Salary:

Hourly Custodian $16.07; Hourly Bus Driver $18.00

FLSA Exempt/Non-Exempt:

Qualifications:

High school diploma or GED required.
General knowledge and experience in building cleaning practices, supplies, and equipment.
Valid North Carolina commercial driver’s license with proper endorsements and a current Bus Driver Pocket Card.
Minimum age of 18 with at least six months of driving experience.
Clean driving record with no DWI convictions.
Must pass DOT drug and alcohol testing.

Essential Job Functions:

Custodial Responsibilities (4 Hours):
Perform cleaning duties, including daily sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and sanitizing restrooms, offices, and common areas.
Cleans and sanitizes water fountains.
Dust and clean furniture, windows, and other fixtures.
Collect and dispose of trash, recyclables, and debris.
Conduct light groundskeeping tasks, such as clearing walkways, blowing leaves from parking lots and/or sidewalks, picking up and disposing trash, and applying deicing compounds as needed.
Handle minor building repairs and report larger issues to the Central Office Operations Manager.
Ensure all assigned areas are clean, organized, and ready for daily operations.
Raises and lowers flags, as needed.
Opens buildings at the start of the workday; securely locks down facilities at the end.
Maintains inventory; requisitions cleaning supplies, as needed.
Performs all other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.

Bus Driving:

Operates the school bus on the assigned route(s) and schedule as provided by the Transportation Office.
Safely transport students to and from designated locations in accordance with assigned routes and schedules.
Maintain student discipline and ensure a safe and respectful environment on the bus.
Is responsible for completing all reports relating to transportation.
Informs the Transportation Specialist or TIMS Manager of any students added or deleted from the route, which may necessitate a change in the route or bus stop.
Adhere to all traffic laws, school bus regulations, and transportation policies.
Conduct pre- and post-trip inspections of the bus to ensure operational safety.
Report any mechanical issues or route changes to the Director of Transportation.
Maintain effective communication with parents, students, and school personnel.
Attends bus safety meetings.
Accepts responsibility for securing the school bus before leaving the vehicle at the conclusion of a run or route.
Accepts responsibility for reporting observable mechanical defects or failures on the school bus.
Performs all other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.

Physical Requirements:

The major physical and cognitive requirements listed below are applicable to the Custodian/Bus Driver job classification within the Maintenance Department of Hoke County Schools. Work in this classification is considered medium physical work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally and up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Must be able to:

Walk, lift, reach, stoop, stand, grasp, balance, climb, kneel, and crouch.
Work in various inside and outside environments, being subjected to weather changes, noise, vibrations, job hazards, and atmospheric conditions.
Use visual acuity required for depth perception and color perception.
Visually inspect small defects and/or small parts.
Use a variety of measuring devices.
Assemble or fabricate parts at or within arm’s length.
Operate machines, motor vehicles, hand tools, and job-specific equipment and tools.
Determine the accuracy and thoroughness of work.
Observe general surroundings and activities.
Hear sufficiently to accurately perceive information at normally spoken word levels Use communication by means of the spoken word to express or exchange ideas.
Safely work in situations of exposure to bloodborne pathogens, which may require specialized personal protective equipment.
