Health Promotion

Reflect on the responsibility of a nurse in public health Public health and the promotion of health and well-being is now at the centre of national and global agendas. On this course, you’ll reflect on the value of nurses as promoters of health – a model for nursing first established by Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing. Discover how to define ‘healthy’ You’ll identify what it means exactly to be ‘healthy’, before going on to define what globalisation is, and learn how it is impacting on healthcare. You’ll identify why your nursing might need to change with the times, and describe what the future of public health looks like in practice. Explore health promotion strategies and nursing ethics In week two, you’ll go on to explore the concept of health promotion, understanding how nurses can act to empower individuals to lead healthier lives – just as Nightingale initiated nursing training and education programmes. You’ll also consider the ethical dilemmas nurses can face when working in the field, and how to reconcile these with your work as social reformers and health campaigners. This course is designed for experienced nurses wanting or needing to extend their understanding of how nurses can act as promoters of health.

Examine the responsibility of a nurse in public health It is important that, as a nurse, you think critically about health and wellbeing and evaluate how your own values, beliefs, and attitudes regarding health inequalities may impact on your assumptions and approach to public health in everyday practice. On this course, you’ll be encouraged to think about the meaning of health and consider holistic, medical, and social approaches to it. Understand different models of health and wellbeing You’ll explore different health models, critiquing the medical model of health, and exploring the social model and the ‘salutogenic’ approach to health. You’ll have the chance to define what wellbeing means in practice, and understand why it matters in the context of health promotion and social reform. Identify why health inequalities exist As a nurse, it’s important to bear in mind that not everyone has equal access to healthcare. Alongside health experts at Coventry, you’ll learn why health inequalities between rich and poor persist, exploring both social and behavioural factors. Finally, you’ll look at how we can tackle these health inequalities, including examining the distribution of power and resources in society. Dartmouth Health Continuing Education for Professionals Home, The 2022 Nursing Leadership Webinar Series: When Nurse Leaders Speak, Legislators Listen, 5/10/2022 12:00:00 PM - 5/10/2025 1:00:00 PM, We know that legislation affects healthcare costs, decision-making, and overall health-related choices for our patients and ourselves. Politicians must often make decisions on proposed bills with limited knowledge of the impact they can have on patient populations, healthcare, and healthcare organizations. Based on Gallup poll results, nurses have been chosen as the number one trusted profession for twenty years in a row. As respected health care professionals, we are able to draw on our expertise – and reputation - to support appropriate legislation. We can contribute personal experiences as professionals in healthcare to address any number of proposed bills by making calls, writing letters, or providing written or in-person testimony. Nursing organizations, such as the New Hampshire Nurses Association (NHNA), not only serve as guides in this work, but offer opportunities to help us learn more and take action. As nurse leaders, we have a significant role to play in the future of healthcare. We encourage you to join us and learn more about the importance of all nurses becoming more aware and involved in legislation that can affect their profession and practice. Presenters Polly K. Campion, MS, RN About our Presenter Polly is a registered nurse and former two-term New Hampshire State Legislator, having served as Vice-Chair of the Health, Human Services, and Elderly Affairs Committee. She is an experienced professional with extensive leadership experience and diverse background in continuous healthcare improvement. Beginning her nursing experience in inpatient oncology, Polly demonstrated progressive leadership and responsibility for clinical improvement, patient safety, and regulatory accreditation over twenty-plus years at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC) and the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Alliance. Following her retirement from DHMC, she worked as a Healthcare Quality Consultant with the Foundation for Healthy Communities and the Home Care Association of New Hampshire.During her time in the Legislature, Polly sponsored or co-sponsored over 40 bills, addressing a wide variety of topics, primarily related to public health. Polly currently serves as the Chair of the NH State Commission on Aging, a comprehensive body formed due to legislation she introduced. She also continues to serve on the State Health Assessment/State Health Improvement Plan Advisory Council (SHA/SHIP), the Medical Advisory Committee of the NH Crisis Standards of Care Committee, and the NH Nurses Association Commission on Government Affairs.A fierce advocate for nurses, patients, and system improvement, Polly has spoken widely on topics addressing system redesign to reduce harm, measuring adverse events, ethical review of quality improvement, reliability in health care, learning from adverse events, pathways and protocols, and creating best practices. She has published articles in the Journal of Nursing Administration, Journal of Nursing Care Quality, Nursing Quality Connection, and the American Association of Neurological Surgeons Bulletin and co-authoring a cookbook.Pamela P. DiNapoli, Ph.D., RN, CNLAbout our Presenter Pam is the Executive Director of the NH Nurses Association, which represents the nurses of New Hampshire in advocacy efforts through legislation, political action, and education. In addition, she has been a member of the New Hampshire Nurses association since 1989.Carol A. Townsend, MSN, RN, CNMLAbout our PresenterCarol is the Director of Nursing for the Community Group Practice in Ambulatory Care within Divisional Administration at Dartmouth Hitchcock Clinics in Nashua, NH. She met Polly Campion in November 2019 when she was in a Healthcare Policy class. Polly spoke so well about legislation and the importance of a nursing voice. Carol joined as a guest for a CGA (Commission of Government Affairs) meeting of the NHNA. From that point on, she was hooked. She signed on as a member shortly after and spent the first year learning more about legislation and action. Recently, Carol has been able to be part of calls with senators, written testimony, and any other way to share her knowledge on how nurses can have a voice in legislation that affects the care of patients in our community. Essential Competencies for Nurse Preceptors

Nursing
Communication Skills
Critical Thinking

Nursing programs partner with a variety of clinical practice settings to provide student nurses expert clinical training. This essential partnership assures students are prepared to provide quality patient care. Within these practice sites, staff registered nurses (RNs) provide nursing students rich clinical learning experiences within a safe yet challenging learning environment. These RNs are identified as Nurse Preceptors. While many clinical practice sites have programs that prepare staff nurses to precept new employees, most programs do not include specific preparation for working with nursing students. This Preceptor Development Program is designed to prepare registered nurses to construct high quality, rich, and effective learning experiences. Staff RNs who participate in preceptor development programs report more confidence and satisfaction in the preceptor role. This effect translates to the student’s learning as well. Students who have well prepared clinical preceptors describe effective and valued learning experiences. Topic areas covered in these modules include: 1. Preceptor roles and responsibilities 2. Assessing learner needs and learning styles 3. Clinical teaching 4. Critical thinking and clinical decision making 5. Legal issues in preceptorships 6. Communication and conflict resolution 7. Managing learning experiences of culturally and generationally diverse students Verified learners may receive 8 continuing education units (CE's) from the University of Maryland School of Nursing. Learn about the ACNC from the ACNC The Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC) is the national regulator of charities. They register and regulate Australia’s many charities and help charities understand and meet their obligations through information, advice, and guidance. They also help the public understand the work of the not-for-profit sector and provide a free searchable register of Australian registered charities. Their staff are experts in their fields and up-to-date with current and emerging trends in charity law and the charity sector. This course is designed for anyone trying to register their charity for the first time, and for anyone with a registered charity that has changed direction and needs to update its official documents.
