As humans are continuously faced with challenges in our lives and in our society, it is essential to grow a trauma informed, and culturally grounded workforce of helpers. This program will explore the history and treatment of individuals with mental health disorders in the United States. Learners will explore the unique opportunities and challenges faced by social workers, and prepare them to provide case management and assessment services to people with mental health disorders. Utilizing a strengths-based framework and a recovery model, the aim is to help those with mental health challenges to move beyond survival and empower them to thrive with the premise that (1) It is possible to recover from mental health challenges, and (2) The most effective recovery is client-directed. This approach is based on four dimensions of recovery health home purpose community Created by a social work educator and licensed clinical social work with a private practice, this certificate program will prepare learners for jobs in organizations focused on mental health treatment and recovery using a strength-based lens and honoring the vast diversity of experiences and ways of knowing and being.

This course will help institutions and individuals better manage the mental health challenges of being a healthcare worker. Healthcare providers such as the University Health Network (UHN) address the mental health needs of their staff through several initiatives intended to help build resilience and to provide respite from the demands of their work. This was critical during the pandemic but, of course, healthcare workers encounter high levels of stress even without a pandemic. The primary purpose of this course was to document and explain lessons learned with the hopes of informing healthcare institutions and healthcare workers about effective strategies and why they work. Dr. Heather Gordon will highlight strategies she has employed within the UHN during the pandemic, and Professor Steve Joordens will discuss the psychology underlying these interventions.

Recovery in mental health and addiction is much more than the absence of illness or mental disorders. It is in fact a process of continuous change by which people with the lived experience of a behavioral health problem improve their overall health and well-being, lead an independent life and strive to achieve their full potential. Individually, recovery is something very personal for each person, but perhaps we can collectively bring together the necessary conditions to facilitate and encourage recovery as a trajectory of emancipation? The experiential knowledge of users of mental health and addiction services as a primary source of knowledge of recovery is the basis of this course, which gives a central place to peer support workers as co-learning partners. A peer support worker is a person who is experiencing or has experienced a significant behavioral health problem and whose attitudes, personal skills and training make them a model of positive recovery for both those being cared for and for caregivers and providers. They represent a source of hope and a return to the power to act while providing psychosocial support to the people they support. In this way, peer support workers promote recognition, by the peers they are supporting and the professionals with whom they are in contact, of the value of lived experience and experiential knowledge.

Despite medical and technological advances, half of the world’s population lacks access to essential health services, and over 8.9 million preventable deaths occur every year. There is an acute global shortage of health workers, a gap that will grow to 18 million by 2030. Studies show that training high-performing community health workers can help close these gaps and save more than 3 million lives annually. In the past few decades, many community health worker programs across the world have demonstrated their ability to save lives — including in the hardest-to-reach areas. Yet despite this progress, lessons on how to successfully scale these programs as part of national primary health systems are not widely shared. This course, developed in collaboration with the Community Health Academy at Last Mile Health, introduces learners to the core concepts of community health worker programs, and explores what is needed to build and strengthen large-scale programs in order to improve access to high-quality health services. The curriculum highlights the key components of designing community health systems, addresses common management challenges, and showcases lessons learned from a range of contributors — from community-level practitioners to government leaders and other global health experts. Through case studies of exemplar countries (including Ethiopia, Bangladesh, and Liberia), participants will learn from leaders across the globe how to advocate for, build, and optimize community health worker programs. This course was created by health systems leaders for health systems leaders. Whether you work in a Ministry of Health, lead or support a community health worker program, mobilize resources and advocate for increased investment in community health, or you are simply interested in knowing what it takes to deliver quality care through community health worker programs, learners will have the opportunity to advance their knowledge and skills to implement critical change. This course can be taken individually, but learners are also encouraged to convene their colleagues from within or across organizations to share insights and further enhance the learning experience.
