COURSE OUTLINE: In manufacturing, quality control is a process that ensures customers receive products free from defects and meet their requirements. Inspection and measurement is needed during production for quality control because of the inherent variability introduced by the machines, tools, raw materials, and human operators which causes variations in the different quality characteristics (length, diameter, thickness, tensile strength, surface finish etc.) of the product. Inspection and testing is very important in maintaining a certain quality level in the product during production. It helps to control the quality of products by fixing the sources of defects immediately after they are detected. Several non-destructive inspection methods also help to perform in-service inspection to avoid any catastrophic failure and predict the remaining life of the product.

This course will emphasize on application of different theories, tools, and techniques for Quality Control and Improvement. Most of the topics will be discussed with relevant problems and solutions in MINITAB 19 software interface. The course will emphasize two broad areas (e.g., Quality of Design and Quality of Conformance). In Quality of Design, relevant topics, such as VOC, Kano model, QFD, and FMEA, will be discussed with examples. Subsequently, the Quality of Conformance topics, such as quality control (e.g., statistical process control) and various topics related to process capability analysis, are discussed. With an objective to discuss topics related to the design of experiments, a few important statistical techniques, such as hypothesis testing, ANOVA, regression analysis, and MSA are covered in this course. Finally, various Design of Experiment (DOE) techniques for factor screening and quality improvement are elaborated with examples. These techniques include factorial designs, fractional factorial design, multiple response optimization, and the Taguchi method.

It is simply not possibleto develop optimal designs that deliverright product performance without understanding the relationship between dependent and independent factors (& within independent factors). Unstructured experimentation consumes indefinite resources and time, that no organizations have. This is true for both Engineering Product Managers and Service Product Managers.Similarly, both Engineering and Service Process Managers cannot optimize process parameters or design products without conducting structured experiments.Quality Managers have to constantly improve the quality of product, its reliability and that cannot happen without improvising design in a structured manner. As a part of DMAIC or DFSS improvement projects, Lean Six Sigma Black Belts & Lean Six Sigma GreenBelts are expected to find ways to improve the process and optimize it and it would not be possible with knowledge of structured experimentation (Design of Experiments - DOE)This course is going to help Product and Process Engineering Managers from both Service & Engineering Sectors to learn DOE from scratch.Practical Knowledge of DOE is non-negotiable for any Product, Process, Quality Managers & Lean Six Sigma Black Belts.
