JOB SUMMARY
The Special Education•General Curriculum Teacher plans and provides appropriate learning experiences for students with disabilities in a variety of educational settings. This position is responsible for creating a flexible instructional program and supportive learning environment that delivers specialized instruction and enables students with disabilities to access and benefit from the general education curriculum to the greatest extent possible through the use of supplemental aids, accommodations, and other necessary supports. The teacher reports to the principal and assistant principal.
REQUISITE EDUCATION AND SKILLS
Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college or university. Valid Virginia teaching license in Special Education or the ability to obtain one through reciprocity from another state. Must hold or be eligible to obtain a provisional or collegiate professional Virginia teaching license in Special Education (official transcripts required). Demonstrated knowledge of and sensitivity to the needs of a diverse student population. Ability to develop effective working relationships with students, parents, and school personnel.
ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
(including but not limited to the following) Comply with all federal and state laws, State Board of Education regulations, and School Board and Superintendent policies. Perform duties necessary for the efficient and effective operation of the school system. Serve as a case manager for students with disabilities. Provide direct and indirect instructional support in a positive and structured learning environment. Modify the general education curriculum using a variety of instructional strategies and technologies to meet individual student needs. Plan and implement balanced instructional activities that promote observation, inquiry, and investigation. Collect, analyze, and use data to develop, implement, and evaluate Individualized Education Program (IEP) services. Develop lesson plans and instructional materials; provide individualized and small-group instruction aligned to student needs. Translate lesson plans into effective learning experiences that maximize instructional time. Guide the learning process toward IEP goal achievement and establish clear objectives for students. Communicate with parents regarding student progress and collaborate to determine educational priorities. Select, administer, and interpret assessments in accordance with division testing practices for eligibility and IEP development. Participate in eligibility meetings and contribute to the development of IEPs. Collaborate with parents, administrators, testing specialists, social workers, and other professionals to design IEPs that support students' academic, physical, and social/emotional development. Develop communication and monitoring plans for students in inclusive classroom settings. Collaborate effectively with paraprofessionals to support student learning. Implement differentiated instructional strategies to meet the needs of individual students and student subgroups. Maintain accurate and timely records and reports as required by law and School Board policy. Work cooperatively with staff and maintain positive interactions with parents and community members. Demonstrate knowledge and effective use of curriculum content, instructional materials, and adopted resources. Prepare thoroughly for assigned classes and provide evidence of preparation upon request. Administer developmental and subject-specific assessments to determine student performance levels and guide instruction. Coordinate instructional activities with school-based and non-school-based professionals to maximize learning opportunities. Demonstrate effective classroom management and instructional delivery techniques. Monitor students in multiple settings (e.g., classroom, playground, field trips) to ensure a safe and positive learning environment. Maintain an effective system for monitoring student progress and communicate concerns appropriately. Participate in professional development and attend meetings as required by the Superintendent, Principal, or supervising administrator. Perform other duties as assigned that support the mission and vision of Manassas Park City Schools.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The position requires the ability to effectively communicate and interact with staff and the public through telephone and in-person contact. Duties require the ability to see, read, talk, hear, and handle or feel objects and controls. The employee must have the physical capability to operate standard office equipment, including but not limited to a computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. Some climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions may be required.
