Job Description
3D Technician Job Description Black Hills Institute of Geological Research is currently seeking a full-time 3D Technician to prepare research-quality replicas of fossil specimens. Black Hills Institute of Geological Research Inc. (BHI), has long been recognized as the world's finest paleontological and earth science supply house. The Institute's primary business is supplying professionally prepared fossils, fossil casts, and mineral specimens for research, teaching, and exhibit. Our staff have been the leaders in developing new techniques and new materials for use in fossil exploration, collection, preparation, and exhibition. Position Summary Work with real fossils!! The 3D Technician will be responsible for the operation, maintenance, and output quality of 3D printing and scanning equipment. This role is essential for supporting our design, prototyping, and production workflows by ensuring the efficient delivery of high-quality 3D models and components. The ideal candidate possesses strong technical aptitude, meticulous attention to detail, and a proactive approach to troubleshooting and process improvement. 3D Printing Operations- Operate and maintain a diverse fleet of 3D printers, including Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) and Stereolithography (SLA) systems.
- Prepare 3D models for printing, including orienting, generating support structures, and slicing using proprietary and standard software.
- Monitor print jobs continuously, intervening as necessary to resolve errors, material jams, or machine malfunctions.
- Perform post-processing on printed parts, including cleaning, sanding, curing, assembly, and finishing to meet required specifications and aesthetic standards.
- Manage material inventory, including ordering, storage, and handling of various filaments, resins, and powders. 3D Scanning and Modeling
- Operate structured light 3D scanners to capture precise digital models of physical objects.
- Process raw scan data, including alignment, registration, mesh editing, noise reduction, and hole filling, using software like Geomagic, MeshLab, Blender, or similar.
- Assist in basic CAD modifications or file repairs to ensure models are watertight and print-ready. Maintenance and Quality Control
- Execute routine preventive maintenance on all 3D equipment according to manufacturer specifications and internal schedules.
- Diagnose and repair hardware and software issues with minimal downtime.
- Develop and document standard operating procedures (SOPs) for machine operation, calibration, and troubleshooting.
- Conduct thorough quality checks on all printed and scanned outputs to ensure dimensional accuracy, surface finish, and integrity. Collaboration and Documentation
- Communicate proactively with design, engineering, and production teams regarding job status, technical constraints, and material options.
- Maintain detailed logs of machine usage, maintenance history, material consumption, and job performance metrics.
- Stay informed about advancements in 3D printing technology, materials, and software.
- Maintain the 3D file database. Other duties as assigned Qualifications Required Skills and Experience
- Practical experience with 3D printing and additive manufacturing.
- Familiarity in 3D preparation software (e.g., Cura, PreForm, Magics, Flashprint, Pursa, Orca).
- Familiarity with 3D scanning hardware and post-processing software.
- Basic knowledge of CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, Rhino, Fusion 360) for viewing and minor adjustments.
- Strong mechanical and troubleshooting skills with a meticulous attention to detail. Preferred Skills
- Certification in a relevant technical field (e.g., Additive Manufacturing, Engineering Technology, Industrial Design)
- Proven hands-on experience operating and maintaining professional-grade FDM, SLA, or SLS 3D printers.
- Knowledge of quality assurance processes for 3D printed parts.
- Experience in a production or service bureau environment.
- Basic knowledge of anatomy.
- Having some creative/artistic experience. Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift and move materials or equipment up to 30 pounds.
- Comfortable working with chemicals and solvents associated with post-processing (with appropriate PPE).
- Ability to stand for extended periods while monitoring equipment.
