Job Description
Our growing plastic surgery practice is seeking a highly organized, detail-oriented Surgical Billing Specialist to join our team full time in the office. This role is ideal for someone with strong experience in surgical billing, paper and electronic claims, out-of-network billing, claim troubleshooting, and revenue cycle follow-up. The ideal candidate will be thorough, dependable, proactive, and comfortable managing claims from submission through resolution. Experience with athenahealth EMR is strongly preferred. Responsibilities Submit, track, and follow up on surgical billing claims, including paper and electronic claims Complete and submit
HCFA/CMS-1500
claim forms accurately Manage out-of-network billing workflows Track claim status, denials, corrections, appeals, and resubmissions Review and track EOBs and payer responses Troubleshoot claim issues and coordinate corrections with athenahealth billing/coding support, outside billing consultant ABW, and internal leadership and clinical staff as needed Ensure timely claim submission and follow-up Maintain organized documentation of claims, EOBs, payments, denials, and outstanding balances Assist with self-pay collections and patient balance follow-up Communicate professionally with payers, patients, internal staff, and outside billing partners Identify recurring billing issues and help improve billing processes Maintain strict confidentiality and compliance with HIPAA and practice policies Requirements Minimum 2 years of surgical billing experience Experience with paper billing required and out-of-network billing preferred Experience completing HCFA/CMS-1500
forms required Strong understanding of claims submission, claim correction, EOB tracking, denials, and appeals Ability to work full time in the office (either Suffolk or Virginia Beach) Excellent organization, follow-through, and attention to detail Ability to manage multiple claims and priorities simultaneously Strong written and verbal communication skills Professional, dependable, and team-oriented Comfortable working in a fast-paced medical office environment Preferred Qualifications Experience with athenahealth EMR Experience in plastic surgery, reconstructive surgery, or surgical specialty billing Familiarity with reconstructive and out-of-network surgical billing workflows Experience coordinating with outside billing consultants or third-party billing/coding support Ideal Candidate The right candidate is extremely organized, thorough, and detail-oriented. They take ownership of claims, follow through consistently, and are comfortable tracking issues until they are fully resolved. This person should be able to work independently while also communicating clearly with leadership, staff, billing partners, and patients.
