This role ensures timely medical and psychiatric triage, screening, assessment, medication reconciliation, withdrawal monitoring initiation, and coordination of care to support safe patient admission and continuity of treatment. The RN Admissions Specialist works collaboratively with the admissions team, providers, nursing staff, therapists, and support staff to ensure all admissions are completed in accordance with facility policies, state regulations, accreditation standards, and best clinical practices.

  • 10:30 PM Weekends and holidays may be required based on facility needs.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Complete comprehensive nursing admission assessments for incoming patients. Obtain and document medical, psychiatric, substance use, trauma, and social histories. Perform physical health screenings and assess for withdrawal symptoms utilizing approved assessment tools (e.g., CIWA, COWS). Review all admission documentation for completeness and accuracy. Conduct medication reconciliation and verify current medications, allergies, and pharmacy information. Communicate admission findings and clinical concerns to providers in order to obtain orders for admission. Initiate provider orders, implement detoxification or residential treatment protocols as directed, and submit electronic prescriptions to the pharmacy. Assess patients for immediate medical or psychiatric concerns requiring escalation, medical clearance, or referral to a higher level of care. Obtain vital signs, urine drug screens, breathalyzer testing, and other required admission procedures. Educate patients regarding facility rules, nursing procedures, medications, withdrawal expectations, and treatment process. Ensure timely and accurate electronic medical record (EMR) documentation. Coordinate admissions workflow with intake coordinators, behavioral health technicians, and nursing staff. Monitor newly admitted patients for stabilization and safety concerns during the shift. Participate in warm handoff reports to communicate pertinent information to staff assuming care of the patient once admitted to the unit. Maintain compliance with HIPAA, infection control standards, medication administration policies, and safety procedures. Assist with direct patient care and nursing unit support as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS, CERTIFICATIONS, AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
Current and unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in the applicable state. Minimum of one (1) year nursing experience required. Experience in behavioral health, detoxification, addiction medicine, psychiatric nursing, or residential treatment preferred. Emergency room experience is also considered beneficial. Knowledge of substance use disorders, withdrawal management, psychotropic medications, and co-occurring mental health conditions preferred. Strong assessment, communication, crisis intervention, and documentation skills. Ability to work independently in a fast-paced admissions environment. Proficiency with electronic medical records (EMR) systems preferred. High School Diploma or Equivalent required CPR/FA Certification

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to stand, walk, bend, and assist patients throughout the shift. Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds occasionally. Ability to respond effectively during medical or behavioral emergencies.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Inpatient detoxification and residential substance abuse treatment setting. Frequent interaction with patients experiencing withdrawal symptoms, psychiatric conditions, and emotional distress. Exposure to crisis situations requiring de-escalation and rapid clinical decision-making.
PREFERRED SKILLS
Ability to provide compassionate, empathetic care and communication to individuals suffering from substance abuse. Experience with detox admission workflows and utilization review processes. Familiarity with Joint Commission and state licensing standards. Ability to prioritize multiple admissions while maintaining attention to detail and patient safety.
