Job Description

The New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) keeps New York City healthy, safe, and clean by collecting, recycling, and disposing of waste, cleaning City streets and vacant lots, and clearing snow and ice. DSNY is the nation's largest municipal sanitation agency, with nearly 10,000 employees, 59 district garages, and a fleet of more than 5,000 trucks, cars, and other types of equipment. The Department clears litter, snow, and ice from approximately 6,500 miles of City streets and removes debris from vacant lots as well as abandoned vehicles from City streets. Under the supervision of the Director of Executive Operations, the Executive Assistant to the Commissioner will provide administrative support for the Sanitation Commissioner and other DSNY executive staff. The responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
  • Strategic Calendar Management:
    Manage scheduling and calendars for the Commissioner and select other senior staff, prioritizing meetings, briefings, and public appearances while ensuring the Commissioner is prepared with necessary materials.
  • Communications Liaison:
    Screen and prioritize phone calls, emails, and correspondence from staff, officials, community leaders, and the public.
  • Briefing & Documentation:
    Coordinate with Department leadership to gather briefing memos and reports. Ensure meeting materials are prepared and organized in advance of meetings.
Special Projects:
Assist in the coordination of special initiatives, ranging from departmental events to high-level meetings, ensuring events and meetings are professional, orderly, and well-executed.

  • Mastery of MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and ability to quickly learn new systems and platforms.
  • Excellent writing, communication, interpersonal, analytical, research, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  • Proven ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
  • Outstanding communication and writing skills.
  • Outstanding attention to detail and the ability to juggle various priorities and deliver under strict deadlines.
Qualification Requirements 1. A Baccalaureate Degree and two (2) years of full-time paid experience in an administrative or managerial position or 2. High School graduate and four (4) years of full-time paid experience as described above or 3. A satisfactory equivalent. Residency Requirement New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County.
