Job Description

DIVISION
Superior Court
CLASS DEFINITION
This class is accountable for performing specialized administrative support tasks in courtroom clerk service, jury administration and related court support services to assist in the effective functioning of assigned courts.
GUIDELINES FOR CLASS USE
This class consolidates the working titles of Courtroom Clerk I and Jury Services Assistant. Although incumbents may perform a variety of other administrative support tasks in support of court operations, incumbents allocated to this class must be regularly assigned to Courtroom Clerk or Jury Services Assistant duties for less than 65% of their time. Those incumbents who perform such work as court services or data terminal operation and who may serve as Courtroom Clerk or Jury Services Assistant for intermittent or occasional periods of time typically should be allocated to the Administrative Clerk I class. When courts are not in session, incumbents generally perform court services work. Positions whose principal assignments are as Courtroom Clerk are distinguished from Courtroom Clerks in the Administrative Assistant class in that those positions are required to lead or direct the work of other Courtroom Clerks including making their daily work assignments and providing their training. Those Courtroom Clerk positions are recognized as the advanced level of practitioners in that field.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the general supervision of a Deputy Clerk or other employee of higher grade.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
May lead lower level staff as assigned.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Provides juror orientation and instructions; answers questions from jurors and provides assistance; swears in jurors; enters juror attendance information into computer; collects juror information questionnaires; enters and retrieves information in computer to prepare jury panels for cases; processes juror payroll, mileage and other reimbursements; may exercise independent judgment with regard to postponing or excusing jurors from service in accordance with orders of the court; prepares appropriate forms; prepares lists of jurors selected for trials; schedules jurors according to caseflow needs; arranges for necessary equipment and accommodations for jurors with special needs; opens mail; makes copies; orders supplies; maintains filing systems and records. Records courtroom proceedings in civil, criminal, family and juvenile matters; provides continuance dates for future court proceedings; puts defendants to plea; calls bond forfeitures; swears in witnesses; marks exhibits; records dispositions; receives verdicts; prepares a variety of court orders; carries out orders of the court; performs related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITY
Considerable knowledge of court operations and courtroom procedures; considerable knowledge of office procedures; considerable knowledge of and ability to use legal terminology; considerable knowledge of proper grammar, spelling and punctuation; considerable oral and written communication skills; interpersonal skills; considerable ability to carry out multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment; computer usage skills.
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
General Experience:
Three years of clerical experience in a Clerk's Office.
Substitutions Allowed:
1) A Bachelor's degree may be substituted for the General Experience. 2) An Associate's degree and one year of court or legal experience may be substituted for the General Experience. 3) Sixty college credits and one year of court or legal experience may be substituted for the General Experience.
