Job Description
The Claims Assistant works as part of the Benefits and Enrollment Section of the Business Office within the Iowa City VA Health Care System (ICVAHCS). Primary duties are to help Veterans determine eligibility and entitlement for health care services in the VA system. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 05/21/2026.
Minimum Qualifications:
You must qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:Specialized Experience:
You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade (GS-04) in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization.Specialized experience includes:
performing various administrative duties, such as completing forms, making eligibility determinations, and/or handling telephone contacts; providing assistance and guidance to a variety of customers; utilizing computer systems for data entry; and verifying the accuracy of information.OR, Education:
Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have successfully completed four (4) years of education above the high school level. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. One year of full-time undergraduate study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business, secretarial or technical school.OR, Combination:
Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have a combination of specialized experience and post-high school education beyond the second year. You will be asked to participate in a pre-employment examination or evaluation as part of the pre-employment process for this position. The work requires minimal physical effort and mainly office work, such as standing, walking, bending, sitting, talking on telephone and typing.Work Environment:
The work is normally performed in an office setting. The work area typically is adequately lighted, heated and ventilated. The incumbent observes established safety standards and practices as defined in current policy.
