Job Description

PRIMARY PURPOSE
Responsible for providing public relations, technical support and clerical services including issuing permits and collecting fees for permits and licenses, answering routine building and housing code questions from the general public, and the scheduling of inspections.
SUPERVISION
Under direct supervision of the Building Commissioner.
DESCRIPTION OF WORK
ESSENTIAL
JOB FUNCTIONS
Provides support for Building Commissioner, Plans Examiner, Planning staff, Inspection staff and office operations. Provides website technical support to general public for permitting and contractor's business licenses both in person and by phone. Issues permits and collects fees within limits of authority and in compliance with City and department policies. Makes decisions within limits of authority and in compliance with City codes and departmental polices and supervisory instruction regarding appropriate action. Archives all departmental records according to numerical or other acceptable organization methods. Answers phones, responds accurately and courteously with everyone including the public. Prepares monthly department reports utilizing a variety of programs including databases and excel. Operates a variety of office equipment, including computers, copiers, scanners, etc. using appropriate software. Provides support for the various boards and commissions as necessary. Prepares reports and responds to routine requests for information in a timely fashion.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of construction practices, building permit processing, and code enforcement procedures desired. Basic skill with Microsoft Office software including word and excel. Ability to learn specialized computer applications. Basic skill with business correspondence formats, record keeping and both physical and electronic filing systems. Ability to handle multiple tasks with accuracy and with frequent interruptions. Ability to maintain confidentiality and provide courteous, accurate and timely information to the public.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
At least two years of experience in general office work. Construction or code enforcement background desirable.
