Job Description

Position Summary:
The Secretary for the Public Defender's Office is responsible for performing a wide range of clerical duties and serving as clerical support where needed. Essential Job Functions Perform administrative support for Public Defender staff. Prepare all documentation for cases referred to the Public Defender's office as assigned. Ensure all information (e.g., letters, motions, police reports, etc.) is entered or scanned into the system in a timely and accurate manner. Forward relevant information to other agencies. Schedule meetings for clients to meet with assigned attorney. Answer calls in a professional and courteous manner, schedule appointments, and take and deliver messages. Type briefs for attorneys, ensuring format conforms to established guidelines. Prepare and file brief extensions, motions and appeals as directed, ensuring proper signatures and seals are present. Establish and maintain filing systems, both computer based and physical documents. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, County employees, elected officials, attorneys, law enforcement, judges, other agencies, clients, and the general public. Report to assigned worksite with regular, predictable, and consistent attendance. Perform other clerical duties as needed. All other duties as assigned.
Preferred Talents:
Knowledge of legal procedures and deadlines for the preparation and processing of legal documents. Knowledge of legal terminology, evidence codes/requirements, and Penal Code provisions. Knowledge of modern office methods and practices and procedures of a law office. Ability to perform clerical work accurately with minimal direction and within time constraints. Bilingual; highly preferred.
Qualifications:
High school diploma/GED, required. Legal/business background.
Physical Requirements:
This position must be able to sit for long periods of time, operate a computer, office equipment, and may occasionally lift up to 20lbs.
Working Environment:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be exposed to indoor conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
