Job Description

Job Overview We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Ophthalmic Assistant to join our dynamic ophthalmology team. The ideal candidate will possess a strong foundation in patient care, medical terminology, and ophthalmology procedures, with a commitment to providing exceptional service in a fast-paced clinical environment. As an Ophthalmic Assistant, you will support ophthalmologists by performing clinical tasks, managing patient intake, and ensuring the smooth operation of the front desk and medical records. This role offers an excellent opportunity to develop specialized skills in eye care while contributing to improved patient outcomes. Responsibilities Assist ophthalmologists during patient examinations by preparing equipment and ensuring proper aseptic technique. Take and record visual acuity measurements, adhering to HIPAA privacy standards. Conduct patient intake by collecting medical histories and updating electronic health records (EHR) systems such as Epic and other EMR platforms. Prepare patients for ocular procedures, including dilation and tonometry, ensuring comfort and safety throughout the process. Maintain accurate medical records, ensuring compliance with HIPAA regulations and clinic policies. Support optical services by assisting with frame selection, lens measurements, and retail sales activities. Manage front desk operations, including appointment scheduling, patient check-in/out, and insurance verification, referrals, and confirming appointments. Apply knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology to facilitate effective communication within the healthcare team. Uphold infection control standards through proper aseptic techniques and equipment sterilization practices. Collaborate with the clinical team to ensure efficient workflow and high-quality patient care delivery. Requirements Prior experience in medical office settings or ophthalmology clinics is highly preferred. Strong understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology related to eye care, and ophthalmic procedures. Familiarity with EMR systems such as Epic or similar platforms is essential for managing electronic health records efficiently. Knowledge of HIPAA regulations to ensure patient confidentiality at all times. Experience with optical services, including lens measurements and retail sales, is advantageous. Ability to perform vital signs assessment accurately while demonstrating excellent patient care skills. Basic proficiency in retail math for sales transactions and inventory management within optical retail environments. Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail in maintaining medical records and documentation. Strong communication skills for effective interaction with patients, team members, and external vendors. Willingness to learn new skills related to medical coding, billing processes, pediatrics, and clinic operations as needed.
