Job Description

Warren County Public Defender Legal Clerk I The Warren County Public Defender's Office is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Legal Clerk I. This position's primary responsibility is to answer phone calls received during business hours, route them appropriately, ensure messages get accurately recorded and relayed to office employees, and to check all office voicemails left off-hours. The Legal Clerk also performs a variety of clerical assignments, including reviewing, scanning, processing, and indexing legal documents, utilizing a computerized case management software database. The clerk is expected to independently perform duties in accordance with a prescribed set of office policies and procedures, for which all necessary training will be provided. Supervisors will be available for consultation, and to provide instruction on new or difficult tasks. Work is performed under the general supervision of higher-level support staff team members, but the position reports directly to the Chief Public Defender or First Assistant Public Defender. There is opportunity for growth in this position, including potential promotion to higher level Legal Clerk positions if warranted.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Answers incoming telephone calls and directs them to appropriate recipients; Greets and directs visitors, serves as the office's first line of communication with public; Scans and processes confidential legal records for client files; Performs general clerical support functions for attorneys, such as organizing/shredding paperwork, sending client letters, and filing legal papers at court clerk's offices; Keeps inventory of office supplies and helps creates supply orders; Scans documents received by mail and distributes them to correct recipients; Downloads and organizes electronic discovery files on office servers; and Utilizes Microsoft programs (Outlook, Word, Excel), Adobe Pro, and Legal Server software to perform assignments.
SALARY:
$43,495 annually
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
(a) Possession of Associate's Degree or higher; OR (b) Graduation from high school, or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, AND i. Two years of full time, paid clerical experience, which included use of computer applications and automated systems as a major job function.
RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT
At the time of appointment, the candidate must reside
EITHER:
(1) In Warren County; OR (2) In a county adjoining Warren County. The position will be filled based upon Civil Service requirements. A provisional appointment will be made with an exam to be held at a later date. Candidate must meet Civil Service requirements for appointment following the establishment of the Eligible List.
