Job Description

Part-Time Laboratory Technician / Safety Officer Department of Chemistry and Physical Sciences, St. Joseph's University The Department of Chemistry and Physical Sciences at St. Joseph's University is seeking two Part-Time Laboratory Technician/Safety Officers to support the academic laboratory program—one position based at the Brooklyn campus and one at the Long Island campus. This position offers an hourly rate of $28 and requires availability for 15-20 hours per week on weekdays . Position Summary The Laboratory Technician/Safety Officer plays a key role in supporting instructional laboratories, maintaining chemical safety compliance, managing hazardous waste procedures, and assisting faculty and students in laboratory operations. The position supports general chemistry, organic chemistry, and laboratory courses for non-science majors. Key Responsibilities Laboratory Operations & Preparation Prepare materials, reagents, and equipment for laboratory courses. Assemble and dismantle laboratory setups for instructional labs. Maintain the cleanliness, organization, and operational readiness of laboratory spaces. Chemical Stockroom Management Assist with receiving, inspecting, inventorying, and distributing chemicals used within the department. Maintain accurate chemical inventories and stockroom records. Laboratory Safety & Compliance Assist in maintaining compliance with applicable EPA, OSHA, and New York State regulations. Conduct laboratory safety, chemical hygiene, and hazardous waste training for teaching assistants. Conduct laboratory inspections and monitor safety equipment. Maintain and update Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for departmental laboratories. Respond to chemical spills and laboratory emergencies as needed. Hazardous Waste Management Assist with the collection, classification, storage, and disposal of hazardous chemical waste. Maintain hazardous waste documentation, manifests, inspection logs, and compliance records. Ensure adherence to federal and state hazardous waste and transportation regulations. Qualifications Required Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or a related scientific field. Demonstrated knowledge of laboratory safety practices and chemical handling procedures. Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and email applications. Preferred Minimum of two years of laboratory experience. Experience working in laboratory safety or hazardous materials management. Experience with chemical inventory systems and hazardous waste compliance programs. Certifications The successful candidate must obtain or maintain the following certifications as applicable: OSHA certification (Long Island campus) NYC Fire Department certification (Brooklyn campus) This position offers an excellent opportunity to contribute to a dynamic academic laboratory environment while supporting laboratory safety, regulatory compliance, and student learning.
