Job Description
General Description The purpose of this class is to process inmate mail. Duties and Responsibilities The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary. Opens and examines mail for unacceptable articles, security risks, or contraband. Ensures all inmates comply with written guidelines concerning incoming and outgoing mail. Research incoming mail to verify the sender's address. Ensures the postage machine has sufficient funds to cover daily postage. Inspects and maintains records of all incoming Books, Magazines, and Other Publications. Maintains and orders a supply of certain Inmate Forms, including Inmate Request forms and Grievance Forms. Ensures that all mail containing inmate funds or addressed to Inmate Accounting is transferred to that division in a timely manner. Routes inter-departmental mail. Maintains records of returned mail. Monitors electronic inmate messaging and approves or rejects flagged messages. Utilizes Special equipment to identify mail items possibly containing narcotics Assists with Monitoring Active Remote Visitations Scans articles of mail for suspicious substances Refers suspicious articles to the proper investigative authorities Other duties as assigned by supervisory staff. Performs related work as assigned.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Requires a high school diploma or GED equivalent. Requires one year of experience providing office support or closely related experience.Physical Demands/Work Environment:
Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement. Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken. Requires in-person interactions with individuals currently held in the Galveston County jail. The work is typically performed sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects.
