POSITION DESCRIPTION
Under the supervision of the County Manager or County Fire Marshal, the Vector Control Specialist is responsible for implementing and maintaining the county-wide vector control program. This includes surveillance, prevention and control of disease-carrying organisms such as mosquitoes, rodents and other vectors in accordance with guidelines from the New Mexico Department of Health. This position ensures public safety through monitoring, treatment and community outreach efforts.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Note:
Regular and predictable scheduled attendance in the performance of this job is an essential function. Conduct field surveillance for mosquitoes. Identify vector breeding sites and implement appropriate control measures. Apply pesticides and larvicides in accordance with state and federal regulations. Monitor and document vector populations and environmental conditions. Respond to public complaints regarding mosquitoes Maintain and operate spray equipment, traps and other vector control tools. Assist in disease surveillance efforts (e.g., West Nile Virus). Collect and submit samples for laboratory testing when required. Maintain accurate records, logs and reports of activities and findings. Educate the public on vector prevention methods and environmental health practices. Ensure compliance with EPA pesticide regulations and county safety policies. Assist with emergency response efforts related to vector-borne disease outbreaks. Follow procurement procedures for supplies and equipment.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES
Knowledge of vector biology, habitat and control methods. Knowledge of pesticide application techniques and safety procedures. Knowledge of federal, state and local environmental and public health regulations. Ability to work independently in field conditions with minimal supervision. Ability to maintain accurate records and prepare reports. Ability to communicate effectively with the public and county staff. Ability to operate and maintain specialized equipment. Ability to identify potential public health risks and respond appropriately. Ability to work in outdoor environments under varying weather conditions.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is performed primarily outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, wind and uneven terrain. Exposure to chemicals, insects and wildlife may occur. Requires lifting, walking long distances and operating vehicles and equipment. May require evening or weekend work during peak vector seasons.
REQUIRED
EXPERIENCE and/or
EDUCATION
High school diploma or GED required. One (1) to three (3) years of experience in vector control, environmental health, agriculture or related field preferred. Valid pesticide applicator license (or ability to obtain within required timeframe). Knowledge of New Mexico vector control practices preferred. Valid drivers license required.
SCREENING AND COMPLIANCE
Must possess a valid current state-issued drivers license and not be under suspension, revocation or denial nor have any prior alcohol-related driving offenses within the last five years. Successful candidates must pass a background investigation, a physical examination in accordance with job duties and drug screen prior to employment. Employee must attend a National Safety Defensive Driving Class before driving any County Vehicle. Employee must complete required safety and pesticide handling training before performing field duties.
