How You'll Contribute As an Arborist with the City of Moline, you will help preserve and enhance the community's urban forest by inspecting, pruning, removing, and planting trees across public spaces. You'll use your technical expertise to diagnose tree health, ensure safety compliance, and operate a variety of forestry equipment. In this role, you'll provide leadership to small crews and contractors, helping to maintain high standards of safety and service. You'll also support the City's forestry initiatives by maintaining the GIS-based tree inventory and assisting with public education efforts. Your work will directly contribute to a greener, healthier, and more beautiful Moline. Inspect, evaluate, and prioritize trees for pruning, maintenance, or removal Climb, trim, prune, shape, and remove trees in parks, cemeteries, and public rights-of-way Diagnose tree diseases and pest infestations, recommending appropriate treatments Operate and maintain forestry equipment such as bucket trucks, chainsaws, and loaders safely and efficiently Provide leadership and direction to assigned crew members and outside contractors Maintain accurate records, reports, and the City's tree inventory using GIS software Enforce City policies, ordinances, and the master tree plan related to public trees Respond to public inquiries and service requests regarding tree care and permits Additional Responsibilities Assist with snow removal, storm cleanup, and emergency response operations Participate in developing and updating the City's urban forestry plan and maintenance standards Educate residents about tree care practices and coordinate Arbor Day or community forestry events Perform general maintenance and minor repairs on forestry tools, vehicles, and equipment Solicit vendor proposals and monitor contractor performance for tree-related work Other duties as assigned Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Thorough understanding of urban forestry practices, including tree planting, pruning, removal, and disease identification Strong knowledge of safety procedures, hazards, and regulations related to forestry operations Skilled in operating and maintaining forestry and grounds maintenance equipment Ability to lead, instruct, and coordinate the work of small crews and contractors effectively Proficient in diagnosing tree health issues and determining appropriate treatment methods Excellent communication and customer service skills when interacting with the public, coworkers, and vendors Competent in using Microsoft Outlook and ArcGIS for scheduling, reporting, and tree inventory management Able to follow oral and written instructions, work independently, and respond to emergency situations as needed Education & Experience High school diploma or GED equivalent required; additional coursework or certification in arboriculture or a related field preferred Minimum of four years of progressively responsible experience in tree maintenance, urban forestry, landscape maintenance, or nursery operations Experience operating forestry equipment such as tractors, end loaders, and bucket trucks Equivalent combinations of education, training, and experience that provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered Licenses and Certifications Valid Illinois Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL-B) with air brakes endorsement, or equivalent, required upon application Valid Illinois Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL-A) with air brakes and tanker endorsements, or equivalent, required within 60 days of hire International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Certified Arborist credential required within six (6) months of hire State of Illinois Pesticide Operator's License required within one (1) year of hire Physical Demands and Work Environment The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, sharp hand tools and exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals; and occasionally risk of electrical shock. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Work is performed under varied weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
