Job Description
The Middlebury Area Land Trust (MALT) is based in Middlebury, Vermont and was founded in 1987. MALT's mission is to work with our community to conserve natural and productive landscapes and to enhance scenic, recreational, and educational opportunities. To date, MALT has helped conserve nearly 4,000 acres of farmland, forests, wildlife habitat, and community open space across Addison County. More than 10,000 residents, families, and students use MALT trails each year for recreation, health, and connection to nature. Environmental education is a core part of MALT's mission. Through summer camps, school partnerships, and community programs, MALT reaches hundreds of youth annually, fostering curiosity, confidence, and a lifelong ethic of stewardship. Position Overview MALT seeks Lead Nature Educator/CIT Coordinator 2026 for our summer nature camp program. This position provides hands-on experience in outdoor education, youth engagement, and place-based learning on conserved lands.
Counselors will work as part of a supportive team of educators to deliver safe, joyful, and curiosity-driven outdoor experiences for children ages 5-13. Duties & Responsibilities Outdoor Education & Camp Facilitation (70%) Lead and support nature-based lessons and activities such as stream exploration, forest games, shelter-building, fairy-house creation, and creative outdoor arts. Help create a welcoming, inclusive, and joyful camp environment that supports a wide range of learning styles and abilities. Model curiosity, enthusiasm, and respect for nature while fostering campers' confidence and independence. Support positive group dynamics and age-appropriate behavior management. Coordinate CIT schedule and all communications. Safety, Risk Management & Daily Logistics (20%) Model risk-aware behavior and help campers learn to assess hazards responsibly in outdoor settings. Consult with the Education Manager on any behavioral concerns. Communicate with parents as needed and instructed by the Education manager. Assist with daily camp setup, transitions, and site organization. Support adherence to MALT safety protocols and emergency procedures. Consult with Education Manager on weather related concerns before camp day. Help ensure campers are prepared for changing weather and outdoor conditions. Program Support & Team Collaboration (10%) Assist with lesson planning, material preparation, and program organization. Work collaboratively with fellow educators to maintain high program quality.

Schedule & Commitment Season:
Afterschool:
May 7,14,21,28 & June 4,11 (if available to start early)Summer Camp:
Remotely work hours in April/May to help ensure a smooth transition from the previous coordinator.In person:
June 15th- Late August (1 week of training followed by 8-9 weeks of camp, depending on availability)Hours:
Afterschool hours will be three hours a week. Remote work will not exceed five hours a month during April/May.Summer Camp:
approximately 37.5-40 hours per week, Monday-Friday during summer camp season. Camp runs 9:00 AM-3:30 PM; staff should be prepared to be on site from 8:30 AM-4:00 PM.Location:
