Back 40 Land Management has experienced rapid growth since starting in 2018 and we're looking for someone who wants to grow with us! Our company has formed a reputation along the Front Range for prescribing and providing land management practices that are realistic for the average landowner to accomplish and that are based on sound science. Our specialized services and expertise allow landowners to achieve their land management goals; whether its increasing grass production for an equine facility, controlling noxious weeds on native rangeland, removing invasive woody species in riparian habitat, or maintaining native spaces for communities that contain a shared open space, Back 40 is committed to providing the full scope of work needed and forming long-term relationships with clients. This role will help accomplish a variety of field work tasks, including but not limited to: operating a Finn T-120 hydroseeder, broadcasting and raking in seed, staking straw wattles, operating a 70hp tractor with mounted drill seeder, using a 12ft batwing mower, using a riding brush mower and weed whacker, operating chainsaws and a variety of hand tools, loading/unloading tractor and implements from 30ft gooseneck trailer, hauling loaded trailers using a one ton truck to and from jobsites. This position will also be expected to assist with herbicide applications using a backpack sprayer or UTV sprayer from time to time, as well as occasionally operate equipment like skid steers, mini-excavators, and walk behind loaders. This employee will likely work independently 75% of the time and supervise one or two helpers the rest of the time. Priority will be given to those with a background in small engine repair and/or a general mechanical aptitude. Ideally, this employee will be able to take charge of maintenance tasks like changing fluids, greasing equipment, replacing brakes on trucks, electrical wiring repair for sprayers, troubleshooting mechanical issues, etc. On-the-job training will be provided, but there are a few key requirements that need to be met before a new-hire can fill this role:
  • A valid driver's license, good driving record and experience driving a truck/trailer.
  • Mental toughness
  • not afraid to spend long days working alone in the heat or cold doing manual labor.
  • Physical fitness
  • Ability to hike up to a mile over uneven terrain carrying a 35-pound backpack, lift 25 pounds to head height, lift and carry 50 pounds over short distances, no problems with constantly turning your head around as you back up equipment, no problems with operating a tractor with a cab on bumpy terrain for up to 8 hours (with breaks as needed), ability to work on your feet all day using a chainsaw and hand dragging tree limbs.
  • Ability to follow written instructions and compare work orders to maps generated for work sites.
Must be able to use a map and basic GPS software on smartphone. Need to submit complete work notes daily. Must demonstrate clear and effective written and verbal communication, as some formal written reports and phone calls to clients will be necessary. Ideal candidate will have at least three years of experience in a related field operating equipment similar to what's listed above.
Starting pay:
$22/hour
  • $32/hour DOE Full time / seasonal position This position is anticipated to be filled from early May to mid December in 2026.
This position will require on average 40 hours of work per week, with opportunities for overtime. Work hours are subject to change based on weather conditions. The employee will be encouraged to participate in educational opportunities related to work and earn certifications in herbicide applications, chainsaw operation, etc. For the right candidate, work beyond the end of December will be available (although with limited hours).
