Job Description

Our company is seeking a reliable, hands-on Greenhouse & Nursery Maintenance Technician to help maintain the safety, function, and appearance of our nursery, greenhouse structures, irrigation systems, equipment, and grounds. This position plays an important role in keeping daily nursery operations running smoothly. Responsibilities include preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, irrigation repairs, general plumbing and electrical work, greenhouse structure upkeep, grounds maintenance, and seasonal preparation for cold weather, storms, and hurricanes. The ideal candidate is practical, dependable, mechanically inclined, comfortable working outdoors, and able to solve problems independently. Previous nursery, greenhouse, farm, construction, maintenance, irrigation, plumbing, or electrical experience is helpful, but we are willing to consider the right candidate with a strong work ethic and willingness to learn.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Maintenance & Repairs Perform regular inspections of nursery buildings, greenhouses, equipment, irrigation systems, tools, and general infrastructure. Complete preventive maintenance to reduce downtime and keep operations running efficiently. Troubleshoot and repair equipment, irrigation, plumbing, electrical, and structural issues as they arise. Perform minor plumbing repairs, including lines, valves, pumps, fittings, leaks, and irrigation components. Perform basic electrical repairs and troubleshooting when safe and appropriate. Repair greenhouse components, doors, benches, fans, vents, coverings, shade systems, and related structures. Identify issues before they become major problems and communicate repair needs to management. Coordinate with outside vendors, suppliers, or service providers for larger repairs when needed. Maintain tools, equipment, and supplies in a clean, organized, and usable condition. Irrigation Systems Monitor, maintain, and repair nursery and greenhouse irrigation systems. Check pumps, valves, filters, lines, emitters, timers, controllers, and sprinkler systems for proper function. Respond promptly to leaks, clogs, pressure issues, broken lines, or malfunctioning irrigation equipment. Assist with irrigation improvements, layout changes, and seasonal adjustments as production needs change. Work with nursery and growing staff to ensure crops receive proper water coverage and irrigation systems operate efficiently. Greenhouse, Nursery & Grounds Care Maintain clean, safe, and organized nursery and greenhouse work areas. Keep walkways, driveways, production areas, and workspaces clear of debris and hazards. Assist with light landscaping, mowing, pruning, weeding, debris removal, and general grounds upkeep. Help maintain drainage areas, ditches, roadways, fence lines, and other exterior areas as needed. Support general nursery operations when maintenance priorities allow. Seasonal & Weather-Related Duties Help prepare greenhouse structures, equipment, and grounds for storms, hurricanes, heavy rain, cold weather, and other weather events. Secure loose materials, clear debris, and assist with storm preparation and recovery. Replace, patch, repair, or secure greenhouse coverings as needed. Load, maintain, and monitor wood stoves during winter months to help regulate greenhouse temperatures. Perform daily cold-weather checks when required to protect plants and greenhouse systems. Respond to urgent maintenance needs that may occur outside the normal schedule during freezes, storms, power issues, irrigation failures, or other emergencies. Safety & Compliance Follow all company safety procedures when using tools, equipment, ladders, electrical systems, irrigation systems, and maintenance materials. Maintain a safe working environment for nursery staff, visitors, vendors, and customers. Report unsafe conditions, damaged equipment, hazards, or repair needs promptly. Use proper personal protective equipment when required. Ensure maintenance work is completed in a way that supports safe and efficient nursery operations. Team Support & Additional Duties Communicate clearly with management, growers, production staff, and shipping staff regarding maintenance needs and project priorities. Provide basic guidance to staff on proper use, care, and storage of maintenance tools and equipment. Assist with facility improvements, greenhouse upgrades, irrigation changes, and special projects. Support other nursery departments as needed. Complete additional duties as assigned by management. Qualifications Previous experience in maintenance, repairs, construction, irrigation, plumbing, electrical, agriculture, greenhouse, nursery, or similar hands-on work preferred. Basic understanding of plumbing systems, irrigation systems, pumps, valves, fittings, and water lines preferred. Basic understanding of electrical systems and safe troubleshooting practices preferred. Comfortable using hand tools, power tools, ladders, pumps, hoses, fittings, and basic maintenance equipment. Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills. Mechanical aptitude and ability to work through practical repair challenges. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Ability to prioritize urgent repairs while keeping up with routine maintenance. Dependable, punctual, and willing to take ownership of assigned tasks. Ability to communicate clearly with supervisors and team members. Ability to converse in both English and Spanish is a plus. High school diploma or equivalent preferred. Technical, vocational, agricultural, construction, plumbing, electrical, or mechanical training is a plus. Physical Requirements This is a hands-on position that requires physical labor in outdoor and greenhouse environments.
Candidates must be able to:
Work outdoors and in greenhouses in hot, humid, wet, cold, dusty, and changing weather conditions. Stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb, reach, lift, carry, push, and pull throughout the workday. Lift and carry up to 50 lbs. as needed. Use hand tools, power tools, hoses, ladders, and maintenance equipment safely. Work around water, soil, plants, fertilizers, greenhouse structures, irrigation systems, and equipment. Respond to urgent maintenance issues when needed, including during seasonal weather events. Schedule & Location This is a full-time, on-site position in Hawthorne, FL 32640 . The regular schedule is generally Monday through Friday , with weekend or after-hours work required as needed for maintenance emergencies, cold-weather protection, storms, hurricanes, irrigation issues, or other operational needs. Reliable transportation to the nursery and to hardware/equipment store is required.
