Job Description
Greenhouse Technician Job Description The Greenhouse Technician supports research and production activities by performing daily plant care, operating greenhouse equipment, and maintaining accurate records for a wide variety of crops. This role involves working with corn, soybean, wheat, and other crops in a controlled greenhouse environment, ensuring plant health, data integrity, and adherence to safety and sanitation protocols. Responsibilities Provide daily greenhouse plant care, including monitoring and checking plants for watering needs, harvesting, discarding plants, and processing seeds for corn, soybean, wheat, and other crops. Move carts of plants in and out of greenhouses to support experiments and operational needs. Assist with experiments by collecting data, recording observations, and maintaining accurate and organized records. Safely operate threshing machinery in accordance with training and established protocols. Follow all safety, process, and ergonomics protocols at all times while working in the greenhouse and with equipment. Perform routine greenhouse sanitation tasks, including discarding regulated material, destroying waste, cleaning pots and containers, and cleaning and sanitizing rooms. Carefully maintain plant and seed identity for thousands of unique identities at a time, ensuring accurate labeling and tracking throughout all processes. Collaborate with team members to support greenhouse operations while also working independently with minimal supervision. Use basic computer applications to enter data, update records, and interact with internally developed research software as needed. Essential Skills Experience or strong interest in greenhouse operations, horticulture, biology, plant care, or agriculture. Ability to pay close attention to detail and consistently follow standard operating procedures and safety/ergonomics protocols. Strong communication and organizational skills to document work clearly and coordinate with team members. High degree of self-motivation and a positive attitude, with the ability to work independently as well as part of a team with minimal supervision. Basic computer skills, including familiarity with MS Office programs such as Word, Excel, and Outlook, and the ability to learn internally developed research software. Physical ability to stand and sit for long periods of time and lift at least 30 pounds. Ability to tolerate repetitive tasks for extended periods in a warm, humid greenhouse environment with pollen present year-round. Additional Skills & Qualifications Bachelor's degree in agriculture, horticulture, biology, or a related field, or three or more years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience is preferred. Background or coursework in plant sciences, agronomy, or related disciplines is beneficial. Experience working in greenhouse, agricultural, or research settings is an advantage. Comfort working with a variety of crops, including corn, soybean, wheat, and other species. Work Environment This role is based in a greenhouse and related support areas, working primarily with corn, soybean, wheat, and other crops in a warm, humid environment where pollen is present year-round. The standard work schedule is Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The position requires extended periods of standing and sitting, repetitive tasks, and regular lifting of at least 30 pounds. Work involves moving carts of plants, operating threshing machinery, and performing cleaning and sanitation tasks. The environment emphasizes strict adherence to safety, process, and ergonomics protocols, as well as careful maintenance of plant and seed identity. Typical attire is practical and suitable for greenhouse work, allowing for comfort in warm, humid conditions and safe operation of equipment. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Johnston, IA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $20.00/hr.
