Horticulturist

Job Summary Responsible for management of the greenhouse, design and layout of city flowerbeds and shrubs and application of fertilizers and growth regulators for the City of McPherson. The position offers a wage range of $21.48-$30.91, depending on qualifications and experience. Job Competencies and Essential Job Functions Manages, cleans and maintains the city's greenhouse Designs, layouts, and maintains care of the city's flowerbeds and shrubs Applies chemicals, including insecticides, growth regulators, and fertilizers to plants Orders flowers, seeds, bulbs, and plants Assists with the ordering of greenhouse supplies Plants, maintains and removes plant material from beds through-out the city Performs data entry and designs spreadsheets for the department Removes debris and branches from park grounds Performs public relations Purchases department supplies and maintains inventory Performs landscaping and tree trimming and mowing duties Operates department equipment, including trucks, mowers, and hand tools Performs tree removal from city grounds and painting duties Assists with mosquito control and snow removal from the city's sidewalks and parks Enforces compliance with federal, state, and local regulations Performs other duties as assigned Complies with all organizational and departmental policies Operates required equipment/tools Maintains confidentiality of sensitive information (oral, written, or electronic) Consistent and reliable attendance is required; employees must report to work regularly, on time, and in accordance with their assigned schedule Position Requirements and Qualifications Education / Experience requirements: High school diploma or equivalent Continuing education in related field Two years of similar or related experience preferred Licenses /

Certifications:

Valid state driver's license and maintain a good driving record Kansas Commercial Driver's License (CDL) preferred

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Thorough knowledge or horticulture, plant and shrub maintenance, fertilizer and pesticide applications Ability to operate greenhouse furnaces, evaporative coolers, sprayers, irrigation controls and other as required Strong time management and prioritization Independent work capability Quick decision-making and sound judgment Project and priority management Strong communication and problem-solving skills Proficiency in math, spelling, computer use, and calculators Professional and courteous demeanor High attention to detail
