AFSCME 2733 Unit A JOB SUMMARY Under the direction of a higher classified employee, is responsible for the design, care, and maintenance of the landscaped areas of the park system. Uses a mixture of native, ornamental plants and other natural features to create and maintain visually aesthetic and sustainable gardens. Collaborates on the design and implementation of all aspects of landscape projects throughout the park system.EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Develops, maintains, and performs the necessary land management on landscaped and natural areas throughout the park system. Responsible for establishing associated schedules and records. Routinely inspects and ensures proper maintenance of plantings, gardens, trees, shrubs, and related landscapes and natural features throughout the park system. Responsible for establishing and performing routine maintenance of gardens, trees and planting, and other natural areas as needed using applicable materials and equipment. Repair, maintain and replace planters, pathways, irrigation systemponents as necessary. Design and develop plans for flowerbeds as designated in park locations, including developing, plant lists, layout design and project estimates to include plant inventories, maintenance schedules, and procedures. Update GIS maps of maintained flowerbeds and irrigation systems. Conduct office/administrative tasks as needed including plan for professional development opportunities. Coordinates and implements horticultural related projects across Washtenaw County Parks¿ facilities. Coordinate work with parks leadership and staff. Assists the with leading workdays and provide horticultural-based content to the public. Coordinates work schedules, materials, tools, equipment, and safety training/gear as needed for above activities and tasks. Assists the Natural Areas Preservation Program crew in performing stewardship initiatives for invasive removal and site restoration, including assisting with prescribed burns and restoration efforts. Bids out supplies and services as needed and writes corresponding contracts. Including but not limited to, bulk mulch orders, bulk annual flower purchase, perennial plants/trees/shrubs purchases, Arborist, and landscape contracted services. Diagnosesmon insect parasites and diseases of landscape plants, determines, and implements control measures. Operates and maintains necessary maintenance equipment including, but not limited to tractors, sprayers, mowers, weed whips, blowers, power augers, etc. Assists with general maintenance of grounds and equipment as needed. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Understanding of ecology, ecosystems, landscape plant materials with a specific emphasis on Michigan native flora and fauna and their environmental requirements. Knowledge of landscape/garden planning, design, and construction techniques. Knowledge of horticultural techniques and procedures for the care and maintenance of plants, including any pests and diseases and measure of monitoring and control. Knowledge to operate, maintain and design irrigation systems. Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships. Must be able tomunicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Ability to perform a variety of professional-level program and project management work without close supervision. Ability to operate a truck and trailer for equipment transportation while adhering to all local and state regulations. Ability to prioritize,anize and manage multiple projects. Ability to utilizeputer system to include word processing (word, excel, outlook) and database software applications, including GIS systems. Using sound, independent judgment within established policy and procedural guidelines. Maintain accurate records and files.LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS
Possession of a valid driver's license. Certified Pesticide Applicators License from the State of Michigan Department of Agriculture. Certificate ofpletion from the National Wildfire Coordinating GroupS190/S130
coursework including the necessary fieldwork, or equivalent, as approved by the Department Head.PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Duties require sufficient mobility to work in a normal park and recreation setting and use standard equipment including lawnmowers, trimmers/weed whackers and the use of standard office equipment including aputer, vision to read ed materials and aputer screen and hearing and speech sufficient tomunicate in person or over the telephone. The incumbent will work primarily outdoors and be seasonally exposed to extreme (both hot and cold) weather conditions. The work requires the ability to safely operate a motor vehicle. The incumbent must be physically capable ofpleting the tasks outlined with sufficient physical agility to lift up to sixty (60) pounds. These requirements may be amodated for otherwise qualified individuals requiring and requesting such amodations.EDUCATION
Equivalent to possession of a bachelor's degree in Horticulture, Botany, Landscape Architecture.EXPERIENCE
A minimum of four (4) years of progressively responsible, professional experience in the care of landscape plants, grounds maintenance and natural areas stewardship.
