Farm Hand/Laborer

Flatwater Farms is hiring a full-time seasonal employee for a farmhand position

FARM RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE

• Harvesting, washing, packing for market and wholesale
• A wide variety of field tasks including greenhouse seeding, transplanting, hoeing,hand weeding, pruning, trellising, and bin washing
• Other activities could include weed whacking, mowing, basic drip irrigation setup, and various farm maintenance
• Crew members are expected to maintain focus and mental engagement in the task at hand
• Cleanliness and Maintenance of buildings and field: Taking out recycling and garbage. Taking compost to the compost area. Returning tools after use. Keeping the hop barn clean including sweeping and keeping personal items in your locker. Washing bins.
• Keeping accurate field and harvest logs Flatwater Farms employees are expected to follow proper conduct and safety policies.

Improper behavior is not tolerated and will be grounds for termination

MARKET RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE

Farm crew members are responsible for assisting with Farm Store operations, customer experience for CSA members, and wholesale deliveries.

• Prepare and pack produce for the Farm Stand
• Set-up and break-down the Farm Stand
• Use Square POS system for customer purchases
• Maintain cleanliness of the Farm Stand
• Prepare produce and Refrigerated truck for Chicago Market
• Prepare wholesale orders
• Potential to work at Market in Chicago or locally

QUALIFICATIONS

• Previous farming, retail, or culinary experience is a plus
• Weekend availability preferred
• Must have experience with physical labor or intense outdoor activity
• Able to work in all types of weather (hot, rainy, and cold)
• Able to lift 50 lbs regularly and "be on your feet" for 8 consecutive hours
• Able to stay focused throughout the day, keeping an efficient pace no matter the activity
• People person - able to interact with customers and work collaboratively with the farm team
• Flexibility and a can-do attitude
• Curiosity and a sense of humor
• Must have access to reliable transportation
• Experience operating a tractor, lawncare equipment, or other heavy machinery (or willingness to learn)
• Interest in regenerative agriculture, organic farming practices, and appreciation for the natural world - wildlife, insects, soil and our role in protecting the environment.
• Willingness to interact with customers and provide exceptional customer service
• Cleanliness and organization required.

COMPENSATION

$15-17/hour (depending on qualifications), paid monthly.. The pay for agricultural work at Flatwater Farms is exempt from overtime pay
