Job Summary Professional Grounds Services (PGS), the Landscape Maintenance contractor for the Ford Hub Center in Dearborn, Michigan, is seeking a dedicated and hands-on Horticulturist Assistant to support the care and maintenance of the campus landscape. This role assists with maintaining ornamental plantings, Michigan native plants, grasses, and sustainable landscape practices that enhance the beauty and ecological value of the property. The ideal candidate has a passion for horticulture, enjoys working outdoors, and possesses a strong understanding of plant care, weed management, landscape maintenance, and team leadership. The Horticulturist Assistant will serve as the lead representative in the absence of the Horticulturist and will be responsible for providing direction, support, and oversight to landscape personnel to ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and to quality standards.
Compensation:
$22.00 - $25.00 per hour, based on qualifications and experience. Key Responsibilities Landscape & Plant Care Assist in maintaining the health and appearance of ornamental plants, trees, shrubs, native plantings, and turf throughout the Ford Hub Center campus. Plant, prune, weed, mulch, water, and maintain landscape beds and green spaces. Support seasonal planting projects and landscape enhancements. Monitor plant health and report signs of disease, pest activity, or environmental stress. Assist with irrigation inspections and basic watering adjustments. Apply fertilizers and plant treatments under the direction of licensed personnel. Native Plants & Weed Management Identify and assist with the maintenance of Michigan native plants, grasses, and sedges. Remove and control weeds and invasive species using approved practices. Support sustainable landscape initiatives that promote biodiversity and soil health. Participate in ecological restoration activities and native planting projects. Equipment & Operations Safely operate landscaping tools and equipment, including mowers, trimmers, blowers, hedge trimmers, and other hand tools. Assist with equipment cleaning, maintenance, and organization. Support snow removal operations during winter months, including shoveling, salting, and operating snow removal equipment as trained. Teamwork & Communication Work closely with the Horticulturist, supervisors, and landscape crews to complete daily assignments. Maintain a professional appearance and positive attitude when interacting with clients and colleagues. Communicate observations regarding plant conditions, safety concerns, and maintenance needs. Assist with maintaining records related to treatments, inspections, and completed work. Qualifications Education & Experience Associate degree or coursework in Horticulture, Plant Science, Landscape Management, or a related field preferred. Equivalent hands-on experience in horticulture or landscape maintenance will be considered in lieu of formal education. Minimum of 1-2 years of experience in horticulture, landscaping, grounds maintenance, or related outdoor work preferred. Previous experience with native plantings or ecological restoration is a plus. Snow removal experience is preferred. Certifications Michigan Pesticide Applicator License is a plus but not required. Ability and willingness to obtain applicable certifications after hire is preferred. OSHA or equipment operation certifications are beneficial. Required Skills & Competencies Basic knowledge of plant identification, pruning techniques, and landscape maintenance practices. Familiarity with Michigan native plants and common weeds is preferred. Ability to recognize signs of plant stress, pests, and disease. Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality work. Ability to follow instructions and work independently when needed. Dependable, punctual, and team-oriented. Strong verbal communication skills. Valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record preferred. Physical Requirements Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly. Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb, and perform repetitive motions throughout the workday. Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, rain, and cold temperatures. Ability to safely navigate uneven terrain and landscaped areas.
