Job Description

Looking for a unique working environment? Swanky Roots is hiring a Market Garden Assistant to support field and wash-pack operations for our perishable produce. You'll help with bed prep, transplanting, weeding, irrigation, harvesting, washing, packing, and occasional market or CSA support. Role summary Support day-to-day tasks in our market garden and post-harvest areas to deliver clean, high-quality produce on time. Work is active and outdoors. We will train the right person. Schedule and type Full or Part-time, seasonal. 10-40 hours per week, mornings estimated 7 am - 12
Schedule:
Monday to Friday. Weekends as needed Seasonal variations based on weather and crop plans Responsibilities May include but are not limited to: bed preparation, planting, watering, weeding, thinning, transplanting, potting, harvesting, processing/cleaning, and packaging of vegetable crops as directed. Field operations Bed prep, transplanting, direct seeding, cultivation, trellising, pruning Install, move, and repair irrigation lines and timers. Monitor soil moisture Weed management using hand tools and small equipment Harvest and post-harvest Harvest according to maturity, quality, and food safety standards Wash, sort, and pack to spec with accurate labeling and lot tracking Maintain wash-pack cleanliness and sanitize tools and surfaces Logistics and markets Stage orders for delivery or pick-up. Assist with CSA and market prep Occasionally support farmers markets or special events Records and maintenance Record plantings, harvest weights, and notable field observations Basic tool upkeep and safe operation of hand tools and small equipment Skills Require extended periods of walking, bending, squatting, and lifting up to 60 lbs. Expected to use hand tools such as shovels, hoes, rakes, and seeders. Must be capable of working in sun and rain and know how to protect yourself from the elements; please provide your own boots, gloves, hat, sunscreen, and a water bottle. Requirements Self-motivated and able to follow verbal instructions Flexible when weather conditions prevent field work Comfortable working outdoors in heat, cold, wind, and light rain Able to stand, bend, and lift up to 60 lbs repeatedly Positive attitude, team mindset, and reliable, on-time attendance Nice-to-haves Basic irrigation knowledge Familiarity with harvest quality standards and food safety Comfort talking with customers at markets or CSA pick-ups Success metrics On-time harvests and accurate packs per specs Minimal damage or waste from handling and transport Cleanliness audit scores meeting target in wash-pack Reliable attendance and clear communication of blockers
