Assistant Farm Manager

Asheville Harvest is a 15 acre farm in its official 3rd year of production. This year we are revamping the farm into a French styled Bio-Intensive system, growing an array of lost heirlooms, and unique varieties of produce, legumes, grains, and fruits in one 30 'x 96' greenhouse and three 16 'x 100' caterpillar high tunnels in addition to the main outdoor plots. We produce year round. The main block of production is a mineral rich sandy loam with excellent tilth. We utilize a BCS 739 2-wheel tractor and a larger John Deere for the heavy lifting. We are seeking additional help, full time for the 2026 season, and potentially a part time person to begin in June. This position has strong potential to continue through the winter season and an exciting opportunity for those wanting to learn how to transition and set up a farm into a more sustainable model of French Bio-Intensive agriculture. The ideal candidate can endure working in summer heat, cold weather, wind, etc. We try to stay out of rainy weather but sometimes it's unavoidable in circumstances of harvest days. The Assistant Farm Manager is able to work together with the Field Manager and Farm Owners, and independently. Safety is very important to us. Must be able to lift 50lbs. Experience is not entirely necessary to apply, just a passion for good food and good work ethic. We are happy to train the right person and want this to be a space where learning and education are encouraged. There is a light sense of urgency always on the farm but we prefer a healthy work environment where a sense of humor goes a long way when dealing with Nature. Kindness and understanding are crucial in an agricultural setting, as the work can be challenging at times. Mistakes can happen as this is a constant learning and work environment, but they are not existential mistakes. This year's goal is to dial in systems as we build them. Cleanliness is a top priority and we prefer to keep tools clean and placed back in their homes after use. This is a highly organized and thought out culinary farm. Each Monday we dedicate time to do a brief farm walk/check-in to get caught up on what the week's work will look like. The details are posted on a white board for the week for clarity. This is also part of the educational component where the AFM can ask questions/ make suggestions or understand the direction of seasonal farming. The FA receives a copy of the crop plan to better understand how workflow might look, what to expect, etc. The weekly schedule is subject to change throughout the year but typically is M-F 8am-4:30pm or Tues-Sat not to exceed 40 hours. We recognize that work/life balance is crucial for one's wellbeing. We may cook farm lunches together on Fridays or BYO. There's a nice shady spot to eat by the creek during the summer months. Lunch is a 30 minute paid break.

Compensation:

TBD based on experience, but more competitive than other Asheville Farms. We value people dedicating their time towards farmwork as it is not easy. Farming is also about people. Taking home produce for yourself within reason is acceptable and encouraged.
