GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB
Wilson County Cooperative Extension is seeking a skilled Permanent Part-Time Technician to support the day-to-day maintenance and care of the Wilson Botanical Gardens. This is a hands-on position plays a vital role in maintaining the beauty, safety, and functionality of the gardens. The Technician will perform general maintenance duties, repair and troubleshoot irrigation systems, maintain garden structures, and support overall garden improvements. This position will also work closely with Extension Master Gardener volunteers and Cooperative Extension staff to foster a positive, collaborative environment. The Wilson Botanical Gardens (WBG) is a 10-acre site located at the Wilson County Agricultural Center, 1806 Goldsboro Street SW, Wilson, NC. The WBG serves Wilson and surrounding communities by promoting tourism and contributing to local economic growth. The gardens welcome over 30,000 visitors annually, including group tours and guests from as far away as Australia. The primary focus of the Wilson Botanical Gardens is education, offering opportunities for learning in horticulture, sustainability, and environmental stewardship
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential Job Functions:
Inspect garden areas to ensure safety, cleanliness, and functionality. Maintain and repair irrigation systems throughout the gardens. Perform general maintenance of garden structures, but not limited to arbors, benches, fencing, tool sheds, and signage. Assist with routine landscape tasks such as weeding, mulching, pruning, and seasonal planting. Safely operate light machinery and tools (e.g., John Deere Gator, mowers, trimmers, hand tools). Support Extension Master Gardener volunteers and other groups by providing tools, materials, and guidance for garden-related projects. Maintain pathways, lighting, signage, and other public-facing infrastructure. Ensure all tools and equipment are cleaned, stored, and maintained properly. Monitor the condition of garden spaces and report major issues to the Horticulture Extension Agent . Assist during educational events and special programs as needed.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or GED required; technical or trade certifications preferred. Experience in facility maintenance, landscaping, irrigation systems, or a related field. Ability to work independently and as part of a team, including with volunteers and the public. Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills. Capable of lifting up to 50 lbs., working outdoors in all weather conditions, and performing physically demanding tasks. Basic knowledge of horticulture or an interest in gardening is a plus. A valid driver's license is required.
SCHEDULE & COMPENSATION
Position hours may vary based on seasonal needs, garden priorities, and events. Flexible scheduling is available between 8 am - 5 pm, Monday - Friday. This is a part-time position with a maximum of 29 hours per week . Maximum 1,000 hours in rolling calendar year.
