Therapeutic Horticulture Assistant / Greenhouse Worker

We grow and market ornamental flowers in our commercial greenhouse and retail nursery. Position Overview Lettuce Work Nursery near New Albany, Ohio is seeking a dedicated Therapeutic Horticulture Assistant / Greenhouse Worker. This role combines ornamental flower production with neurodivergent youth vocational development. You will maintain flower greenhouse operations while guiding young adults (ages 18-25) on the autism spectrum. Your primary goal is to provide a structured, predictable, and supportive environment where transition-age youth learn essential life and employment skills through horticulture. Key Responsibilities Ornamental Flower Production & Maintenance Propagate, plant, water, and prune diverse ornamental flower varieties. Monitor flower health, moisture levels, and pest infestations daily. Operate automated greenhouse climate control and drip irrigation systems. Mix soils, transplant delicate seedlings, and arrange retail displays. Maintain clean, hazard-free walkways, benches, and tool storage areas. Autism-Specific Vocational Coaching Create highly structured, predictable schedules to reduce participant anxiety. Utilize visual schedules, task-strips, and clear, literal instructions. Adapt greenhouse work environments to accommodate sensory sensitivities (light, sound, texture). Implement individualized service plans (ISPs) and document daily progress metrics. Recognize signs of sensory overload and utilize proactive de-escalation strategies. Foster social communication and teamwork skills among neurodivergent young adults. Skills & Abilities Knowledge of flower care, fertilization, and basic pest identification. Deep understanding of autism spectrum characteristics, communication styles, and sensory needs. Excellent patience, empathy, and literal, direct communication skills. Passion for gardening and horticulture, with a desire to support therapeutic activities. Strong organizational skills with an ability to follow detailed instructions and maintain cleanliness. Ability to perform physical tasks such as lifting up to 50 lbs., standing for extended periods, and working in a greenhouse environment. Demonstrated customer service skills to support interactions with visitors or clients. Requirements High school diploma or equivalent certificate required. One year of experience in ornamental flower greenhouse operations. One year of experience working specifically with individuals on the autism spectrum Certifications & Clearances Valid driver's license with a good driving record Successful completion of a criminal background check and fingerprinting First Aid, CPR, and CPI (Nonviolent Crisis Intervention) certifications preferred Join us at Lettuce Work to make a meaningful difference through horticulture!
