The Horticulture Supervisor collaborates closely with their supervisor and plays an integral role in the leadership of the Nursery team, which includes part-time, student, and volunteer assistants. This is a hands-on gardening position responsible for coordinating daily tasks and duties related to the care and maintenance of campus grounds and gardens. The role includes the ability to lead or co-direct the nursery crew in the absence of the Nursery Supervisor. This position will contribute valuable knowledge and experience to be shared, while remaining open to learning established methodologies that have proven effective. Enthusiasm, a strong work ethic, professional demeanor, creativity, and collaborative mindset are essential for success. The scope and responsibilities of this position may evolve as the campus gardens continue to grow. Additionally, this role may periodically support other Facilities Management (FM) departments as needed.
Job Description:
Required Qualifications:
Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Horticulture or related field, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Valid driver's license with a safe driving record; ability to safely operate a truck with an attached trailer while adhering to all applicable safety protocols. Broad knowledge of landscape tools and powered equipment, including proper use and maintenance, with the ability and willingness to train others. Demonstrated horticultural experience in high-end landscapes, public gardens, or comparable settings within the Mid-Atlantic region; ability to identify plant varieties and recognize stressors (eq. light, moisture, pests, disease), with exceptional attention to detail, accuracy, and responsible follow-through. Knowledge and ability to independently supervise and manage staff with experience serving in a team lead or supervisory role(typically 2+ years). . Supervise, train, and coordinate a regularly changing staff that may include up to four volunteers, two part-time employees, and five student workers, ensuring completion of all assigned tasks. Possess a valid Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS) pesticide license (or transferable credential) in Category 3A, or ability to obtain certification within 12 months of hire. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with others and foster productive collaboration through a with a positive and professional attitude. Exhibit a demonstrated passion for plants, gardens, and horticultural best practices. Function as a self-starter while exercising sound judgement and strong time-management and organizational skills. Strong written and verbal communication skills while maintaining the highest level of confidentiality and professional discretion. Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications and mobile technology used to support the daily work activities. Perform physical duties requiring the ability to lift up to 50 pounds frequently and more than 50 pounds with assistance. Work effectively in a variety of weather conditions, including exposure to outdoor environments.
Conditions of Employment:
This position works a non-traditional schedule including mandatory overtime. Flexibility in scheduling is required to accommodate special events, emergencies, and unscheduled work assignments, which may include evenings, weekends, and/or holidays, are required. The position requires availability for weekends, holidays, holidays, inclement weather, and emergency situations; emergency staffing is mandatory when required by the University. This position requires the ability to perform essential physical functions, including sitting (while driving); standing and walking for extended periods; climbing stairs; bending and twisting at the waist and knees; reaching with hands and arms; pushing and pulling; and stooping, kneeling, and crouching. The position also requires frequent lifting and/or moving of up to 50 pounds and lifting more than 50 pounds with assistance, with or without reasonable accommodation. This position performs outdoors year-round in all weather conditions, including temperatures below 32 degrees and above 90 degrees, as well as during inclement weather. This position is designated as essential and, as such, may be required to report to work when the University is officially closed. This is a non-exempt position, which may be eligible to receive overtime in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act.

Horticultural Operations and Staff Supervision:
Supervise and perform a variety of hands-on daily horticultural tasks while training and educating staff on established methods and best practices. Duties include preparing soil for planting transplanting; plant division and propagation; proper plant labeling; sanitizing tools; maintaining and enhancing designated garden areas through cleaning, pruning, weeding, dead-heading, digging, and transplanting using appropriate soil amendments; performing pathway and walkway maintenance; assisting with color seasonal change-outs; receiving plant and material orders and accounting for overages, shortages, or damage; troubleshooting and performing basic repairs of power tools and irrigation systems; scouting for pests, diseases and overall plant health and reporting findings to supervisor and operating and maintaining equipment. 40%•
Vendor Coordination, Garden Maintenance, and Compliance:
Supervise and oversee vendors and/or contractors as needed; process work orders and assist with set-up activities, particularly during events seasons. Coordinate with the supervisor to provide routine maintenance of garden areas, including watering, trimming, fertilization, and pest and disease control. Implement seasonal crop rotations and bed layouts in accordance with established plans. Prepare and submit reports as directed by supervisor, with particular attention to donor funded activities. Ensure designated garden beds are maintained to the highest standards using best practices and updated methods while remaining informed of emerging industry products, regulations, equipment, and techniques. 10%•
Strategic Planning, Program Support, and Professional Development:
Research, propose, and implement long-term improvements to garden operations and equipment in coordination with and under the direction of supervisor. Develop and maintain a three-year rolling project forecast and analyze related expenditures. Identify and apply for funding opportunities such as Green Fee in collaboration with internal partners. Support the Living Remembrance Program as directed, including installation, ongoing maintenance, and accurate record keeping. Pursing continuing education and professional development, including technical certifications in landscape management, horticulture, irrigation, and equipment operation. 5%•
Inventory Management and Equipment Readiness:
Supervise and maintain accurate inventories of equipment and supplies, ensuring their condition and operational readiness. Collaborate with staff and vendors to support timely maintenance, repair, and replacement of equipment to ensure continuous and effective operations.
Hiring Range:
up to $52,000 commensurate with experience.
