About the State Fair of Texas Since its inception in 1886, the State Fair of Texas has celebrated all things Texan by promoting agriculture, education, and community involvement through quality entertainment in a family-friendly environment. The State Fair of Texas is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with proceeds helping to preserve and improve our home, Fair Park; underwrite museums, community initiatives, and scholarship programs to support students throughout the Lone Star State pursuing higher education; and help improve State Fair operations. SUMMARY Caretaker of Plants and associated materials for the State Fair of Texas. DUTIES and
RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Essential Functions:
Support the Mission and abide by the core values of the State Fair of Texas. Collaborate with Big Tex Urban Farms management, vendors, and consultants to care for and maintain all plants and materials. Work with delivery, warehousing, and distribution of inventory and supplies; assist in the types and quantities of plants and materials to be purchased; work within budgeting parameters to meet operating budget goals. Supervise seasonal help with watering schedules and setup and takedown of the Fair. Water, plant, prune, fertilize and control pests on all plants. Assist with all greenhouse operations including seeding and harvesting, management of system reservoirs and vine crop training. Assist with all elements of mushroom production including genetic work, creating inoculation bags, making substrate bags, inoculation, systems maintenance and harvesting. Load and unload plants and materials. Operate and maneuver heavy machinery including tractors, forklifts, and man lifts safely in various conditions throughout the park. Work additional hours immediately before and during the State Fair performing other duties (e.g., ticket taking, coupon sales, guest relations, etc.). Utilize satisfactory communication skills when interacting with staff and State Fair visitors, providing clear information and assistance related to the Greenhouse exhibits and activities.
Marginal Functions:
Support the Mission Statement of the State Fair of Texas. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required and other duties as assigned. Comply with all internal, state and federal regulations. Comply with all safety regulations and company policies. Complete all training as directed by management.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Computer usage and Microsoft Office (or comparable) products. Plants types and proper atmospheres needed for each Planting practices and procedures. Irrigation practices Fertilizer, plant disease, and pests Ability to: Utilize a variety of negotiating, communication, and economic skills. Work with others in a manner that most cost-effectively benefits the SFT Communicate clearly and concisely. Work effectively deal with time sensitive deadlines. EXPERIENCE and
TRAINING GUIDELINES
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: Preferred Education and/or Experience High School diploma, One to three years' experience in the landscaping industry
License or Certification:
Landscape certifications Fork Lift driver certification

Reports to Director - Horticulture Works under direct and continuous supervision for assignments
WORKING CONDITIONS
Environmental Conditions:
Office environment; exposure to computer screens. Working outdoors in various weather conditions and on uneven and/or slippery surfaces, as necessary, especially during Fair time and special events. Work in greenhouse and warehouse with sharp objects, heavy merchandise, work with electrical energy; exposure to dust, and dirt.
Physical Conditions:
Essential and other important responsibilities and duties require maintaining physical condition necessary for: Remaining in a stationary position for prolonged periods of time. Moving short and long distances to access office supplies, meet guests, perform duties within Fairgrounds, etc. Verbally communicate with both internal and external contacts. Occasionally lift objects no more than 50 pounds unassisted. Kneeling, bending, use of hands and fingers and pulling.
