The PSS Department is a comprehensive academic unit conducting research and offering coursework and programs in several areas of plant and soil sciences. Major/Essential Functions Assists with agricultural research activities conducted at the Texas Tech New Deal Farm for the TeCSIS-TAWC program.
Supports routine field operations, including land preparation, planting, tilling, spraying, plowing, irrigation, and harvesting.
Operates agricultural equipment under supervision, including tractors, planters, sprayers, mowers, and tillage implements, and performs basic maintenance.
Assists with the operation, monitoring, and maintenance of irrigation systems, including wells, pipelines, drip systems, valves, and controllers; reports issues to supervisors as needed.
Supports research activities through field sampling, data collection, crop monitoring, and equipment setup following established protocols.
Assists with maintaining research plots, farm infrastructure including heat tents, fencing, and facilities.
Assists with livestock care and handling, including occasional work with cattle as directed and in compliance with institutional animal care protocols.
Provides updates on field conditions and operational needs to supervisors and team members.
Assists with the coordination of daily activities with farm leadership and research personnel.
Travels as required between the Texas Tech main campus, New Deal Farm, and off-site research locations including producers farms related to TAWC.
Performs work outdoors in variable weather conditions consistent with West Texas, including extreme heat, cold, wind, and dust.
Works a flexible schedule as needed to support time-sensitive agricultural operations. Required Qualifications High school or equivalent and three years' work experience. Additional job-related education may substitute for required experience on a year for year basis. Preferred Qualifications Experience operating and maintaining farm equipment, including tractors, planters, sprayers, and tillage equipment.
Knowledge of irrigation systems and field-scale water management practices.
Familiarity with row crop production systems common to West Texas, including cotton and sorghum.
Experience supporting agricultural research or working in a research farm environment.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.
