Job Description

Cherrystone Aqua Farms (CAF) is a family owned and operated shellfish aquaculture company located on Virginia's Eastern Shore, and the leading cultured shellfish producer on the East Coast. We spawn, grow, pack, and ship millions of hard clams and eastern oysters annually to seafood distributors, major grocery chains, and directly to consumers. Our hatcheries are the vital first step, and we are seeking highly motivated individuals with strong work ethics and willingness to learn in a fast paced, dynamic environment to fill positions in our commercial hatcheries located in Cape Charles and Willis Wharf, VA. Hatchery Technicians report directly to the Assistant Hatchery Manager and work both independently and as part of a team in all aspects of hatchery operations. Responsible for the physical upkeep and daily operations of the hatchery, duties include but are not limited to: Cleaning tanks, equipment, and all associated infrastructure relentlessly, thoroughly, and with a high sanitization standard. Collecting water on the appropriate tidal cycle. Operating pumps for transfer of water and feed to larval, algae, and nursery systems. Feeding and routine maintenance of larval, broodstock, and algae systems. Daily culling, feeding, cleaning and assisting with visual inspection of shellfish at various stages under supervision. Moving, lifting, and transporting carboys, buckets, and equipment throughout the facility. Assisting in all areas of hatchery operations as needed. Keep detailed, accurate daily logs of tasks and observations. Hatchery work is physically demanding.
A typical day involves:
Lifting and carrying 50-100+ lbs. repeatedly. Climbing stairs and ladders multiple times per day. Working in wet, humid environments and outdoors in all weather conditions. Extended periods of standing, bending, and scrubbing. Requirements Attention to detail. Ability to carry out repetitive tasks. Excellent time management skills. Ability to lift over 50lbs and climb stairs multiple times per day. Willingness to work in both indoor and outdoor environments during all seasons depending on the needs of the facility. Reliable transportation to and from work. Schedule Peak hatchery season runs roughly January through June, and the schedule is dictated by the animals and the tides. This position requires availability for weekends, evenings, and holidays during peak season. Promptness and reliability are critical. Compensation This position can be full-time or seasonal based on best fit. Peak hatchery season runs roughly from January to June. $15-$20/hour. Compensation commensurate with experience.
