Grain Elevator Operator Job Description The Grain Elevator Operator safely and efficiently handles bulk corn and corn by-products, operating grain handling equipment to load and unload trucks while maintaining strict safety, quality, and sanitation standards. This role combines hands-on mechanical work, equipment operation, and housekeeping in a fast-paced grain facility environment, with rotating duties across multiple areas of the operation. Responsibilities Unload corn from incoming trucks and direct product to the correct storage locations within the facility. Load corn by-products into outbound trucks in full compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations. Operate conveyors, meters, and bulk weighers to accurately and efficiently facilitate product loading. Operate loading equipment, including front-end loaders and occasionally a forklift, to move product and support loading operations. Compare load orders to actual loads to verify accuracy, ensuring the correct product, quantity, and destination for each shipment. Perform basic preventative maintenance and minor maintenance tasks on equipment as required to support reliable operations. Maintain a high level of sanitation and cleanliness in the work area, including regular housekeeping in a dusty and dirty environment. Perform manual labor as needed, including shoveling, cleaning, and handling materials in and around the grain elevator. Rotate between key workstations, including the loading floor, silo operating area, and loading bins with feed product that drops feed into trucks. Operate and monitor conveyors used for loading trucks, ensuring safe and efficient movement of product. Follow all facility safety, health, and environmental policies and actively participate in related programs and initiatives. Provide courteous and professional customer service to drivers, vendors, and visitors, maintaining a positive and respectful attitude. Adhere to Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standards and all site-specific safety requirements, including proper use of personal protective equipment. Essential Skills Experience operating grain handling or similar bulk material equipment, such as conveyors, loaders, or meters. Ability to operate a front-end loader and work around forklifts in a safe and controlled manner. Mechanical aptitude and the ability to be mechanically inclined for basic troubleshooting and preventative maintenance. Comfort working in a dusty, dirty, and physically demanding environment that involves manual labor. Ability to follow detailed procedures and regulatory requirements related to product loading and shipping. Strong attention to detail when comparing load orders to actual loads to ensure accuracy. Ability to work safely in a GMP-regulated environment and consistently follow safety rules and guidelines. Reliable work ethic, with the ability to work long shifts on a rotating 2-2-3 schedule. Effective communication skills and a professional attitude when interacting with drivers and team members. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience in construction, farming, or similar hands-on work environments. Experience in shipping and receiving or as a grain operator is beneficial. Previous machine operator experience in an industrial, agricultural, or manufacturing setting. Ability to learn and complete certifications related to equipment operation and site procedures. Personal protective equipment is required and provided, including a hard hat, safety glasses, and ear plugs. The position follows a 2-2-3 rotating schedule with shifts typically running from approximately 4:45 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., which results in over 100 more days off per year than a typical Monday-Friday schedule. Work involves standing, walking, climbing, and performing manual labor around grain elevators, silos, loading floors, and truck loading areas, as well as operating and working near conveyors, bulk weighers, and heavy equipment such as front-end loaders.
