Research Full Job Description Job Summary:
Assist Project leaders in successfully conducting aquaculture and fisheries research involving marine organisms that include finfish, seaweeds, and invertebrates. Culture technicians are responsible for participating in all aspects of routine husbandry and associated aquaculture and fisheries research. Live plant and animal caretaking occurs daily year-round, so the ability to work weekends and holidays is required.
Job Functions:
1. Support the production of marine plants and animals, including live food production (microalgae, rotifers and Artemia ) and allocation, fish health and water quality monitoring. Assist in all other aspects of fish husbandry as needed. 2. Help to ensure that all safety and biosecurity measures are being complied with and help in the development of new and improved procedures as appropriate. 3. Help ensure that marine life support systems are fully operational at all times by identifying and reporting problems as they occur. 4. Document all procedures and keep neat and accurate records of all husbandry activities; help develop and update written protocols; assist with reporting needs as appropriate. 5. Participate in other aquaculture and fisheries research as needed
Qualifications:
College degree in Biology highly preferred. Experience with marine aquaculture or aquariums preferred. Self-motivated, hardworking individual with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
Physical ability to team lift and carry up to 50lbs. Vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; hearing to recognize information at normal spoken word levels and speech to communicate effectively in person and over the telephone. Daily activities will vary seasonally, but will include both outdoor (hatchery raceways and grounds) and indoor (hatchery building and office/computer work) environments that can be wet and damp with moderate noise levels. Ability to work weekends and holidays as required. At Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute, your base wage is only a portion of your overall compensation package.
