Shultz Forest Management and Consulting LLC is seeking applicants to fill a full time (40hrs/week), seasonal Invasive Plant Crew Member positions. The primary focus of this position is to conduct wetland restoration on private lands in accordance with NJ DEP regulations and perform forest restoration through invasive plant control and tree seedling maintenance. Primary duties will include mechanical and chemical treatment of both herbaceous and woody invasive plants as well as tree sapling/seedling maintenance on numerous sites throughout Eastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The position will include overnight travel for which hotels and meals will be provided. Crew members will primarily (>75% of position) treat invasive plants using herbicides with backpack sprayers and spray bottles. Mechanical treatment includes using loppers, handsaws, and chainsaws. Tree sapling maintenance includes removing tree tubes and re-staking trees, as well as some deer fence maintenance. Crew members will learn how to use various equipment, how to apply herbicides safely and correctly, how to identify, treat, and manage for several invasive plants, and how to identify common tree species native to the Eastern United States.
Job Requirements:
This is a labor-intensive field position, and the employee should expect to spend >90% of their time working outdoors, must be able to carry a 30-pound pack over various terrain, lift 50 pounds, and work in all weather conditions. Some work will be conducted in wet areas and proper footwear will be required. Encounters with poison ivy, stinging and biting insects, ticks, venomous snakes, and other hazardous conditions common to the forests and wetlands of the area occur regularly. Applicant must have some experience in identifying eastern U.S. tree species and invasive plant species common to the area. An Associate's Degree or two years of college courses as part of a Bachelors degree in Forestry, Environmental Science, Conservation Biology, Natural Resource Management or other related program is preferred for this position. Previous work experience is preferred but not required depending on course work and/or other relevant experience. The successful applicant must demonstrate an ability to work independently and in a team environment.
