Job Description
POSITION SUMMARY
The Urban Forestry Technician plays a key role in caring for Jacksonville's growing tree canopy. Under the direction of the Executive Director, this Full Time• position is responsible for the establishment, maintenance, and stewardship of newly planted and existing trees throughout Greenscape's service area. This hands-on position focuses on watering, mulching, weeding, light pruning, tree monitoring, and general tree care. The Urban Forestry Technician also assists with community tree plantings, volunteer events, and other programs that support Greenscape's mission. •Part-Time candidates will be considered; pay and benefits adjusted accordingly
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 1.
Tree Care & Maintenance Water newly planted trees according to seasonal and site-specific needs Install and maintain mulch rings around trees following urban forestry best practices Remove weeds, invasive vegetation, and competing growth around trees Perform light pruning of young trees to encourage healthy structure and growth Monitor tree health and identify signs of stress, disease, pest activity, or damage Install and maintain tree stakes, ties, watering bags, and other tree establishment materials Assist with tree inventory, inspections, and documentation of maintenance activities Report tree hazards, maintenance needs, and site concerns to supervisors 2. Program Support Assist with community tree planting events and volunteer workdays Load, transport, and distribute trees, mulch, tools, and supplies Support educational and outreach activities as needed Represent Greenscape professionally when interacting with volunteers, residents, businesses, and community partners 3. Equipment & Operations Safely operate and maintain hand tools and equipment, including shovels, rakes, pruners, pole pruners, wheelbarrows, water tanks, pumps, and utility vehicles Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of tools, equipment, and work vehicles Assist with delivery and setup of materials for tree planting and stewardship projects Maintain accurate records of watering schedules, maintenance activities, and project progress
REQUIREMENTS
Education & Experience High school diploma or equivalent required Experience in landscaping, horticulture, arboriculture, parks maintenance, or related outdoor work preferred Coursework or certifications in horticulture, forestry, arboriculture, or environmental sciences are a plus Must reside in Northeast Florida Valid Florida driver's license and good driving record Ability to safely operate trucks and trailers preferred Availability to work some Saturdays and evenings; comp time provided Must pass a background check Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Basic knowledge of tree care, horticulture, landscaping, or urban forestry practices Ability to identify common tree species and recognize basic signs of tree stress/decline preferred Knowledge of proper watering, mulching, planting, and pruning techniques Ability to safely operate hand tools and light equipment Strong attention to detail and ability to follow established procedures Ability to work independently while also contributing effectively as part of a team Ability to interact professionally and courteously with volunteers, residents, and community partners Strong organizational skills and ability to maintain basic records and documentation Commitment to safety and stewardship of public spaces Passion for trees, sustainability, and community improvement Understanding of trees as tools for environmental justice, climate resilience, and green infrastructure strongly preferred Familiarity with urban forestry metrics and tools (i.e. iTree) strongly preferred Physical Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in varying weather conditions Ability to walk on uneven terrain and work at a variety of project sites Ability to stand, bend, kneel, stoop, and perform repetitive physical tasks throughout the workday Ability to lift, carry, and move up to 50 pounds regularly Ability to load and unload trees, mulch, tools, and other materials

$40,000.00 - $48,000.00 per year
