How You'll Contribute Under close supervision of the division manager, performs manual unskilled and semi-skilled work in the day-to-day operations within the Forestry Division and routine operation of trucks, mowers, motorized equipment, small utility tractors and hand tools. Assignments may be given in detail or may follow established routine. Limited discretion is exercised; work is regularly checked by the supervisor for quality, quantity and safety of operation and care of equipment. Assist with tree planting, watering, pruning and removal. Remove brush, debris and litter from public areas, including rights-of-way, parks and green spaces. Utilize heavy hand equipment such as chain saws, pole saws, leaf blowers and chippers. Operate public works vehicles ranging from pickup trucks to tandem dump trucks to haul materials, transport equipment, load refuse and perform leaf collection, snow removal and ice control duties. Maintain public works equipment and vehicles by performing minor maintenance and service including, but not limited to, greasing fittings, topping off fluids and changing plow blades. Mix and apply fertilizers and chemicals to control weed growth or pests at the instruction of the crew leader or supervisor. Utilize hand tools to manually shovel dirt and rock, unload and deliver supplies and materials, maintain trees and vacuum leaves. Clean and maintain equipment as necessary. Perform snow and ice removal duties on City roadways, parking lots, sidewalks, and other property. Provide work instruction to small crews on assigned projects as requested. Other duties may be assigned. Training and Experience High school diploma or GED equivalent; one (1) year experience in forestry and operation and routine maintenance of forestry maintenance motor equipment and public works trucks or related work; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities General knowledge of public works, forestry maintenance techniques and standards; basic maintenance and manual work tasks; operation and function of related hand and power tools; safe work practices. Skill in customer service; effectively communicating with those contacted throughout the course of the workday; maintaining effective working relationships with other departments, agencies, employees, supervisors and members of the public; and in the safe and proper operation of equipment and hand tools. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ensure a safe work environment; work varied shifts and standby; report to emergency work situations, including snow removal and storm cleanup. Licenses, Registrations and Certifications Valid Illinois Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL-B) with air brakes endorsement, or equivalent, within 60 days of hire. Valid State of Illinois Pesticide Operator License within one (1) year of hire. The employee will frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, sharp hand tools and exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals; and occasionally risk of electrical shock. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
